As we inch closer and closer to the coming new year, we find ourselves thinking about how the past informs the present and gives hints to the future. So, we’re spending November looking backward. Won’t you join us?

WATCH

A momentous piece of Pittsburgh history was recently uncovered after the demolition of the Pittsburgh Playhouse. Contained in the cornerstone of the building originally constructed as the second synagogue for the Tree of Life was a time capsule sealed 113 years ago. Watch as Eric Ledji, the Director of Jewish Archives at the Heinz History Center, reveals its contents.

READ

Pittsburgh’s own pop-art poster boy is known for more than his artification of Campbell’s Soup cans and the colorful repetition of famous figures. Andy Warhol was fascinated by consumerism, and his obsession with objects is brought to life through the opening of 610 mystery parcels containing 300,000 total items that Warhol carefully curated, packed, and sealed to be preserved as time capsules. Made up mostly of ephemera, these capsules may seem inherently worthless, but like with any other collection of keepsakes, each item was attention-worthy in the eyes of its collector.

LEARN

The fourth of November marked the 97th anniversary of the discovery of King Tutankhamen's Tomb in Egypt’s Valley of the Kings. King Tut’s Tomb is perhaps the quintessential time capsule of Ancient Egyptian culture. While most tombs belonging to Egyptian royalty were looted beyond recognition long before their excavation, King Tut’s Tomb contained nearly 5,400 items at the time of its discovery.

EXPERIENCE

Speaking of freezing time, Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Science Center will be displaying the largest exhibition of real mummies ever assembled now through April 19, 2020. The exhibition provides a peek into the lives of ancient people from every region of the world, including Europe, South America, and Ancient Egypt.
Shameless self-promo: We just so happen to have a time capsule of our own, but you don’t have to wait 100 years to find out what’s inside. In fact, it’s available online 24/7/365. Check it out!
