Film review
Incendies

Incendies is a 2010 Canadian mystery drama film written and directed by Denis Villeneuve (Sicario).

Adapted from Wajdi Mouawad's play of the same name, Incendies follows the journey of twin brother and sister as they attempt to unravel the mystery of their mother's life following her unexpected death.

Traveling back to her birthplace, a fictional country called Daresh, they embark on a journey into the unknown and unexpected.

Coupled with flashbacks of their mother’s life as a young woman, the film features a creative storytelling technique that engulfs and enthralls the viewer.

As the siblings uncover more facts, other mysteries continue to pop up, leading to a shocking conclusion.

Powerful and compelling, the Academy Award nominated Incendies is a film that we definitely recommended!

Tips & Techniques
TV calibration - Color

In the last few newsletters, we’ve been offering tips on getting a better picture from your TV set. This time we’re going to talk about color.

There are usually three controls on TVs that adjust the color.

First is the Hue control. The hue control makes adjustments to the color, ranging from red over to green. Most sets come with the control set to the middle and we’ve found this is almost always correct.

Next is the Color control. This will increase or decrease the intensity of the color. Though we can’t recommend a setting, as different sets handle this aspect differently, we do suggest not cranking it up to the point were everything looks artificial.

Lastly, is the Color Temperature control. This is sometimes located in a different menu from the picture controls, so you may have to look for it.

This control will adjust the overall color temperature. Ideally, the color should be at 6500K, but many times, if the set is set to ‘Cool’, it can be as high as 10,000K, which makes the picture noticeably blue.

Our experience tells us that the ‘warm’ setting is the most accurate. If you’ve had your set on the ‘cool’ setting for a while, the warm setting may look completely wrong at first.

However, like most of our picture recommendations, give it some time and you will soon see an improvement.

Audioquest PowerQuest 2

As we add more electronics to our homes, we increase the chances of polluting our AC lines. Inexpensive, or poorly designed devices can introduce noise into the wiring of our homes, which isn’t good for audio video systems. To help with cleaning it up, new from Audioquest, is a noise suppressing power conditioner, the PowerQuest 2.

The power filtration system that Audioquest uses removes more noise and distortion than most common power conditioners, dramatically improving your system's performance. Unlike traditional surge protectors, non-sacrificial surge suppression prevents both high voltage and current from damaging your equipment.

The PowerQuest 2 features six individual AC outlets. One is optimized for video devices, while another is ideal for high-current applications, like amplifiers. The other four can be used with anything else.

All of the outlets pass the AC through a linear filter using Differential-Mode Noise Dissipation. The video outlet adds additional Noise-Dissipation technology to maximize TV performance.

The PowerQuest 2 features both a slim profile and a rugged floor-mounting stand that makes it ideal for mounting behind cabinets. Power cords plug straight down to the top-layer AC outlets, making installation trouble free.

As a bonus feature, the unit offers two high current USB ports for charging portable devices.

For those who prefer shelf mounting, the bottom stand can be easily removed. This allows easy access to all six power outlets. Sending clean power to your A/V system was never so simple or convenient.

Best of all? The new Audioquest PowerQuest 2 sells for just $200!

Sonos Connect:Amp

There is no doubt that wireless music has transformed today’s homes. Whole house systems that used to cost tens of thousands and needed lots of wiring (and patience to learn how to use them) are passé.

Leading the revolution for the last few years has been the American company, Sonos. One of their most popular components has been the much heralded Connect:Amp.

Similar to the ever popular Connect, the Connect:Amp is a zone player, albeit one with an amplifier.

At its heart is a 55-watt Class-D amplifier, which is enough for a wide range of speakers (except maybe esoteric, demanding designs).

A dedicated subwoofer output allows for putting together a 2.1 channel system - great if you’re using smaller speakers!

While it receives music wirelessly, it also includes a 2-way Ethernet switch. An analog input means you can add a CD player or even a turntable to your wireless network.

Tone controls are available for bass, treble and loudness controls via the free Sonos controller app. It’s available for Mac, PC, iOS and Android platforms.

Online music services like Spotify, Deezer, Pandora and Rhapsody all work seamlessly with the Connect:Amp, again, all via the intuitive controller app.

Normally selling for $499, Harmony is selling our display model for just $398!
