Ballard Multimodal Corridor

11/08/19 – Ballard Multimodal Corridor Construction Update

This week, crews continued concrete work, including curbs, driveways, sidewalks and ramps on NW Market and NW 54th streets. Crews also continued pole foundation work along the corridor.

On Monday, the Metro eastbound bus stop in front of the National Nordic Museum returned to its original location at the southeast corner of the 28th Ave NW and NW Market St intersection.

Please take care when traveling through the work zone as lanes may shift.

Businesses are open!

South side work on NW Market St
Upcoming work

This schedule is weather-dependent and subject to change.

Crews will not be working on Monday, November 11 in observance of Veteran’s Day.

As early as Tuesday, November 12, westbound traffic will shift to the south side of NW Market St between 24th and 26th avenues NW to accommodate work on the north side of the street. Eastbound traffic will also switch to the south side after work is complete in the center lane.

On the south side of NW Market St, upcoming work includes curb preparation and concrete pours.

Next week, crews will apply the new channelization markings on NW Market St and NW 54th St. We expect this work to wrap up by the end of next week.

Next week, crews are scheduled to pour the remaining pole foundation on the north side of NW Market St. Crews will also continue to patch pole foundations.

On NW 54th St, sidewalk and curb work is scheduled for next week. Crews will pour sidewalks and ramps, as well as prepare and pour curbs. Crews will also continue to install new pole foundations. We will continue to work with businesses to coordinate driveway paving.

Sidewalk work will cause an increase in pedestrian impacts. Please follow pedestrian detour signage placed along the project corridor.

As work continues along the project corridor and limits space for cyclists on the road, please remember to share the sidewalk and be aware of your surroundings.

Crews work to complete roadway paving near the intersection of 28th Ave NW and NW Market St.
What to expect during construction
  • Typical work hours from 7 AM to 10 PM, Monday through Saturday
  • Crews may work some nights and weekends to minimize impacts to traffic during weekday commute times
  • On-street parking and lane restrictions near work locations
  • Temporary sidewalk and crosswalk closures with signed detours
  • Noise, dust, concrete odors, and vibration
  • Access to businesses and residences will remain open, driveway restrictions will apply
  • Work is weather dependent, so timing of work may change if needed
Stay connected Thanks for your patience and support while we complete this project. We’re working to minimize construction impacts as much as possible.

Street Name Change

As of November 4th, the City of Seattle renamed a block of NW 54th St to help reduce confusion for emergency service providers. There were previously two intersections with the same street names: NW 54th St and NW Market St, 1.5 miles apart. Duplicate names create confusion for emergency response dispatchers and can delay response. The new name is "NW Locks Pl" in the location shown below on the image below.

NW Market St Paving

Beginning in summer of 2020, we will be paving NW Market St between 24th Ave NW and 15th Ave NW. This project includes sidewalk repairs, curb ramp upgrades, water main replacements, and stormwater drainage improvements. Seattle Public Utilities and King County are working together on the Ship Canal Water Quality Project to prevent polluted stormwater and sewage from entering Seattle waterways. Work in Ballard includes 24th Ave NW pier reconstruction, work on the western end of the tunnel, a new pump station and new pipe systems.
