Celebrate America Recycles Day on November 15th!

NOVEMBER UPDATE

America Recycles Day is a nationally-recognized day that celebrates and promotes recycling in the U.S and falls on November 15th. On this day, people are encouraged to spread the word about the benefits of recycling and to practice recycling themselves. This holiday was created by the National Recycling Coalition in 1997, and in 2009, the holiday became an integral part of the Keep America Beautiful Campaign. Today, there are thousands upon thousands of events across the entire U.S to not only raise awareness about recycling but to encourage people to recycle.

How can you celebrate America Recycles Day? Educate yourself on what is and is not recyclable in our area (not all recycling facilities accept the same materials). Be conscientious of the products you buy, reduce the amount of waste you produce, and recycle more. Together we can create a cleaner, healthier planet!

What will you commit to recycle? Take the #BeRecycled pledge here!

#OptOutside with REI and Keep Durham Beautiful on Black Friday!

This November we're partnering with REI Co-Op and the NC Mountains-to-Sea Trail to provide a way to #optoutside this holiday season!

Recently, a large area of litter has been discovered near the Mountains-to-Sea Trail and Falls Lake just off of Redwood Rd. The litter has been collecting in this area in very large quantities and we are committed to getting it all cleaned up! We would like to see lots of people come out to help in one big effort to get as much of the litter as possible.

Choose from two different dates: Saturday, November 16th from 10AM to 12PM or Friday, November 29th from 10AM to 12PM. Gloves, vests and trash bags will be provided. Please wear sturdy shoes or boots, long pants, and dress in layers for the weather. This is going to be a fun and impactful event and will be a great way to get involved with Keep Durham Beautiful!

TreesDurham Survey

TreesDurham, a local non-profit that believes that all Durham residents deserve a socially just, healthy, and sustainable urban forest, wants you take their survey. The survey, open until November 30th, was developed in partnership with graduate students at Duke’s Nicholas School of the Environment. Through this survey, TreesDurham aims to meaningfully involve as many residents as possible to inform their advocacy for a more equitable distribution of environmental amenities in Durham.

Trees provide many environmental protections in cities, from better air quality, reduced heat and flooding, to calming traffic and in some cases lower crime. This project is timely because the City of Durham is revisiting its Comprehensive Plan starting this Fall, with an eye toward land use which would impact the number and kind of trees in Durham.

We're excited to announce the first of the Friends of Geer Cemetery Education Series events! It is a public forum called “African American Cemeteries: Remembering, Reclaiming, Resisting.” The event will be held Saturday, November 16th, 3:30 PM to 5 PM at the NC School of Science and Math.

The forum will inform the Durham community about the history and reclamation efforts at Geer Cemetery. Guest speakers, who include historians, journalists, and activists involved in major cemetery preservation projects, will put Geer Cemetery and the current efforts there in a broader context of African American cemeteries nationwide, addressing issues of American memory, African American history and deathways, white supremacy, gentrification, and public space. This event is free and open to the public!
We are creating a Litter Prevention Program for Durham schools that will give students the opportunity to learn about and engage in environmental stewardship activities. We are conducting a needs assessment survey to hear about what community members believe would be best for their schools.

The results of this survey will be used to create a sustainable program that addresses the expressed interests and needs of the elementary school communities. Your opinion matters! Please take the survey and share it with others who are part of the elementary school communities. The survey will be open until December 1, 2019.

For questions about the survey or the program please reach out to Abby Gostling at abby@keepdurhambeautiful.org or (919) 560-4197 ext. 21222.

Bull Moon Rising Recap
For a few short days and nights in November, Durham was made more beautiful by the stunning artwork of Luke Jerram in the form of a 23-foot moon hanging in the center of Durham. Bull Moon Rising was presented by the City of Durham’s Cultural & Public Art Program, Durham’s Museum of Life and Science, Keep Durham Beautiful and Austin Lawrence Partners, along with our signature Moon Sponsor, Gateway Building Company. Thank you to all who visited and donated, danced and shared their awe and inspiration.
As a nonprofit, we depend on donors and volunteers to support our mission of waste reduction, litter prevention, and community greening. We have been working with communities in Durham for over 15 years to provide the tools and opportunities for anyone and everyone to become stewards of our neighborhoods and the land.

This #GivingTuesday, an international day of giving, ask yourself "What gift am I giving my community this year?" Choose to give the gift of clean streets, clean waterways, reduced waste, and more trees planted today. When you give to Keep Durham Beautiful, you will be giving to all of Durham!

Give today!

Take action in your community!
