MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
Kenya Sánchez Vicarte was born in Mexico City and grew up there until her father was transferred to Detroit, Michigan while working for Chrysler. Here she had the opportunity to attend school in two very different countries and benefit from the merging of two cultures and a Mexican American identity. She attended James Madison College at Michigan State University where she got a Bachelor's degree in international relations and economics. She had the opportunity to intern on Capitol Hill for Representative Sander Levin, where she learned about the migration crisis more in depth. After graduation, she moved to Washington DC to continue working in the immigration field as a paralegal. In this role she helped represent Latino Immigrants through asylum applications, court proceedings, and domestic violence abuses. Through volunteer work she also focused on aiding detained immigrants at the US-Mexico border, specifically those found at the Dilley detention center. Starting in January, Kenya will be pursuing a masters degree in international affairs at the American University of Paris, focusing on researching the effects of return migration in Mexico. While in DC, Kenya was part of MXDC’s steering committee, helping expand our programming agenda by building partnerships with other organizations in DC and recruiting volunteers. We wish her the best!
