Black Women for Positive Change: Pittsburgh

Black Women for Positive Change is a national policy-focused network of predominately African American women and “Good Brothers” from many States, including  Pennsylvania.

The network has two primary goals: (1) To positively contribute to ideas and methods that can strengthen and expand the American Middle/Working class, with an emphasis on the African American community; and (2) To Change the Culture of Violence in America.

In 2019, Black Women for Positive Change has  worked on gun violence and the impact on African American communities, advocated for common senses gun regulations in partnership with Moms Demand Action and CeaseFirePA, and recently hosted its 8th Annual Week of Non Violence.

TAKE ACTION
Voice Your Interest in Green Solutions

Here’s an opportunity via neighbor, Pittsburgh United, to send a comment to the EPA telling them that you want your money spent wisely on green solutions.

From friend of the church, Brandi Fisher, at Pittsburgh United: “Green solutions like green infrastructure that captures stormwater above ground can bring other benefits such as mitigating flooding, preventing basement backups, creating more green space, improving air quality, and creating long term jobs.”

Add your voice to public comments now.
Pittsburgh Report on Gender and Race Inequity

Horrifying, yes. Shocking, no. This week the City’s “Gender Equity Commission” reported on the, to put it in Hizzoner’s words, “third world conditions” that are the lives—and deaths— of many of Pittsburgh’s Black and Brown women and girls, including infants. The next steps for the Commission are to identify solutions.

Actions you can take:
  • Read the full report, and the Gender Equity Commission's response.
  • Participate in a focus group with the University of Pittsburgh’s research team. (Email 412Equity@pitt.edu or call 412-510-9601).
  • Follow details on the annual Pittsburgh Gender Symposium at Chatham University on November 2nd, which will spend the full half-day event on the report. (Registration is closed; learn more here.)
  • Get on the Gender Equity Commission mailing list and attend its public meetings, held every month with time set aside for public comments. (Find contact and more info here.)
