39th Ward Alderman Sam Nugent

COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER
November 27, 2019

Dear neighbors,

The Gladstone Park Chamber of Commerce hosted their annual Police Recognition Breakfast on November 7. Congratulations to Officer Solano and Officer Encarnacion from the 16th District for going above and beyond to keep the Gladstone Park community safe.

It was a pleasure to participate in a panel on Climate Change for One Book, One Chicago. Discussing Elizabeth Kolbert’s The Sixth Extinction. I look forward to touching base with my fellow panelists in the future to discuss potential environmental initiatives for the ward.
Thank you to the Peterson Park Improvement Association for hosting me at Solomon School. It was a great night of speaking with neighbors and answering questions about the future of the 39th Ward.
We were happy to once again partner with Commissioner Bridget Gainer’s office to discuss the Cook County Budget and the City Budget. Thank you to all who attended and to our neighbors at the Irish American Heritage Center for hosting.
Thank you to Hollywood North Park Community Association for inviting me! It was a pleasure to address you and learn more about your great ideas to make our community inclusive and vibrant.

Thank you to Lisa Daubney and Ashley Donohue for completing your two-year terms as Hollywood-North Park Community Association officers, and welcome to Reggie Newton in his new role on the board.  As always, thank you to Andrew Johnson for leading the charge.

I’m so proud to represent Von Steuben High School. We stopped by to address the staff and thank them for their hard work and dedication to our students. Thank you to Principal Jennifer Sutton for your continued dedication to our students and your staff.
I was happy to stop by the 17th District CAPS community conversation. These community conversations are designed to discuss and develop the 2020 Community Policing Plan. It is an open space format that members will be seated in smaller groups at tables with officers to discuss and notetake ideas and discussions presented by our community members.

CHICAGO POLICE DEPARTMENT

Crime Prevention and Information Center

We gathered a group of my fellow freshman alderman to tour the Crime Prevention and Information Center (CPIC) of the Chicago Police Department  at the CPD's Public Safety Headquarters (3510 South Michigan Ave.).

The Department's CPIC is one of over 75 fusion centers in the United States. A fusion center is a collaborative effort of two or more agencies that provide resources, expertise, and information to the center with the goal of maximizing their ability to detect, prevent, investigate, and respond to criminal and terrorist activity.

Thank you to the 39th Ward’s own Lieutenant Patrick T. Quinn for arranging this and to Ald. Cardona (31), Ald. Hadden (49), Ald. Martin (47), Ald. Sigcho-Lopez (25), Ald. LaSpata (1), Ald. Vasquez (40), along with staff from the Public Safety Committee for joining us.

You can reach our office at ward39@cityofchicago.org or 773-636-5594.
For emergencies, call 911 or 311.

THE NEIGHBORHOOD

Community Highlights

We love our North Park Village Neighbors!

We kicked off the Thanksgiving season with great friends, Casey Mark Smagala and Representative John D’Amico by serving the residents at North Park Village.

We LOVE Northside Learning Center! We joined them at their Jewel Turkey Drive.

We got the chance to tour the new People’s Gas facility. We learned all about the sustainability and efforts to engage the 39th Ward Community in their planned development.

I had so much fun at the annual Sauganash Women’s Club Fall Fundraiser!

Thank you for inviting me, and keep up the great work.

We were delighted to host The First Responder Story Showcase with State Representative Brad Stephens, Alderman Anthony Napolitano, Alderman Jim Gardiner, and State Senator Rob Martwick.

It was presented by Chicago based non-profit, Erasing the Distance and featured first-hand mental health experiences collected from police officers and firefighters. The event was a one-hour professional performance that brings these stories to life, followed by a facilitated discussion about the stigma and issues faced by the first responder community and their families. Thank you to our first responders today and every day.
We had our 4th Participatory Budgeting meeting. We are continuing to work through all of the ideas that were submitted. Thank you to our hard working team of volunteers who sit on the Participatory Budgeting Committee.

Yard waste should be left in the alley or at the curb for collection, and bagged separately from garbage in the black cart and separately from recycling in the blue.

Yard waste bags will be collected based on 311 requests and then taken to be composted.

Peterson Elementary Updates

  • In the area of academic progress, Peterson students are exceeding standards: performing above the 50th percentile. Our mathematics and reading growth is above average with students growing at the 65th percentile in mathematics and at the 81st percentile in reading. Peterson’s attainment is also well above average. Student attainment in mathematics is at the 73rd percentile and at the 83rd percentile in reading. Due to the collective effort of all Peterson educators, Peterson is now a STEAM School.
  • This new designation will allow Peterson to continue to provide high quality education to our students grounded in the STEAM philosophy and multidisciplinary learning. As a result of the commitment of Peterson educators, Peterson was recognized as an exemplary social and emotional school, a designation that lasts for two school years (2019-2021). Peterson is very proud of its student-leadership programs, Student Ambassadors and Student Mentors. Student Ambassadors give tours to families and provide translation at events like Parent-Teacher Conferences. Student Mentors meet with younger students every day to support them and help them feel connected to Peterson.
  • This year marks the first year students at Peterson will be adhering to a student-developed dress code. Students in the Dress Code Committee met throughout the last school year to develop goals and draft policies for the new dress code. Their efforts culminated with a presentation to the Local School Council where they received approval for the new dress code.
Peterson is also extremely proud of Ms. De’Andrea Bell, one of our English Language Arts teachers. Ms. Bell was recently awarded the Fulbright Teachers for Global Classrooms Program grant. Ms. Bell received this grant as recognition of her academic and professional accomplishments as well as her leadership potential.
  • Thanks to the efforts of our STEAM Coach, Ms. Kathleen Hurley, Peterson has once again received the Out-of-School Time (OST) Grant for after school programming. This grant makes it possible for our students to benefit from a number of enrichment and academic after school programs throughout the year. Bethany Crino, the Visual Arts’ educator at Peterson, partnered with IPAINTMYMIND, to create an art gallery at Peterson. Ms. Kiran Ionita (7th ELA) and Ms. De’Andrea Bell (6th ELA) are partnering with Chicago Poetry Foundation Hands on Stanzas throughout this year.
