Developer Newsletter 002

Winter has come to Stockholm, and the studio is wrapping up for the holidays. But first, we're ending the year right with some big open source releases for both Blender and Cargo!

I also got an inside look at how our Rust engineers work day-to-day, their favourite tools, and what they think the future of Rust has in store.

New to the newsletter? Welcome! This is a monthly summary of what Embark's been up to in open source and the greater developer ecosystem.

Let me know what you think! You can send feedback about the newsletter or questions to opensource@embark-studios.com.

Inside Rust at Embark 🦀

As you may know, we ❤️ Rust at Embark. Many of you have asked about why we use Rust, and how it is to work with every day. In this post, I interviewed 2 of our Rust engineers (whose talks you may have seen last month) about how they use Rust day-to-day, and what they envision for #Rust2020.

Open Source

We've released our Blender tools!

Last month we announced our sponsorship of the Blender development fund, and teased our studio tools. Today, we open-sourced those tools as a Blender add-on for everyone to use!

These everyday tools speed up our art team and help them be consistent in their workflow.

You can download the add-on now on our GitHub!

A new tool for Cargo

cargo-about is a Cargo plugin we created for generating and formatting a list of all of the crates used by a root crate, and the terms under which they are licensed.

This can help you easily comply with the distribution terms of open source licenses, or showcase and credit open source software you use.

You can see an example and start using the crate on our GitHub!
