Calling All Philly Teens!

Creative Resilient Youth (CRY) is a teen-led initiative bringing awareness to mental health through art-making and collective knowledge building. We piloted the program with 9 teens last year and are looking to recruit a new cohort for 2020. The program will meet weekly and culminate in a collective exhibition and zine in May 2020 to coincide with Mental Health Awareness month. See the CRY Instagram for a glimpse at our activities from the last year.

2019 CRY alumni are taking the lead and need your help to realize better access to mental health understanding and support for younger teens through co-creative art workshops, research, mentorship, and community building.

We are seeking partnerships with local businesses and donations to support (dollar amounts are based on CRY 2019):

  • ($600) Food and Snacks: Meetings take place in the evening and we’d like to be able to feed volunteer youth leaders.
  • ($620) Art Supplies: We envision leadership and organizing centered around collaborative art-making. Partnerships to gather necessary supplies would help catalyze the work teens are dreaming up in communities.
  • ($140) Transportation: CRY teen leaders are foregoing paid work to attend meetings. We'd like to make it less costly to come to meetings given that not all teens have transportation passes.
  • ($5,500) Program Coordination: Countless hours go into coordinating, developing programming, and sustaining CRY. Donations go a long way for our 5 youth leaders and 4 adult volunteers seeking to envision and actualize better strategies of care in our community.

Sponsors and donors will be featured on our new CRC website (launching early 2020), CRY related newsletters, and print material.

In September we launched a new program with Southeast by Southeast and Jefferson University to bring immigrant and refugee youth from Southeast and Northeast Philadelphia together to identify spaces and strategies where they felt safe, supported, accepted, and/or cared for.

Stay tuned in December for an update as we work with artist Amberella to install a representation of phrases that encompass these strategies across spaces identified by youth.

This project is supported by Jefferson University via Community Driven Research Day and Slought.
