What's in store for November...

Munro Reserve Art Competition closes
The Munro Reserve Art Competition closes for submissions today. Now the excitement begins as we wait to see which piece of art is the winner! Thanks to City of Stirling (Cos) sponsorship the winning piece will be displayed on new notice boards at Munro Reserve. There is also prize money for first, second and third place getters. The prize winners will be announced mid December 2019.

Getting those colourful poles finished
Civic action was certainly in full swing on November 2 and 3 with the pole painting project along Scarborough Beach Road. A majority of the 69 power poles along The Bend in the Road (The Bend) now have at least one coat of colour thanks to over 75 wonderful people.  To join in on the final day of painting on 23 November  register here.
Now... question time... Do you actually know why the poles are being painted? If you don't you are not alone. There have been some pretty interesting guesses. One person suggested the poles were painted in protest against the arrival of 5G...Ahhh...wrong....so let us explain. One of our new committee members, Joslin, summed it up nicely.

 'The poles were painted to spark conversation along The Bend and hopefully get people to look past the poles to the local business and stop and explore!'

In addition to that perfect summary, we also think that the poles (which are painted in The Bend logo colours) just look good. When the painting is finished stencils of 'The Bend' as a title and various Bend icon images will be applied onto the painted poles.

What’s up next…..

Your chance to spend on The Bend with Micro grants
Micro grants are small funding amounts provided to locals for local projects. The Bend in the Road Inc is ecstatic to be able to offer micro grants to The Bend community and would effectively work as an auspicing agent. Small grants of up to $500 would be made available for locals to progress local projects in keeping with The Bend’s strategic plan and annual priorities. The concept is open ended, allowing people to come forward with their own unique interests and gifts to 'do something which brings the community together and makes The Bend a better place to live, work and visit’.

The grants will target the following focus areas and priorities for 2019/20.

  1. Live and Local: bringing The Bend to life with music, events and celebrations fit for our beachside and urban lifestyle
  2. Growing Green: making The Bend blossom
  3. Pavement performances –relaxed tunes and carpark jazz
  4. Bendesque artworks
  5. Magnificent Munro
The small grants have been found to be enough incentive for people to come forward with all sorts of ideas that out-of-pocket expenses have previously prohibited. For example, current ideas from Bend locals that could be activated via a micro-grant include:
  • A local singing tutor who is setting up a choir of locals would use funding to do a public concert;
  • A Bend shop owner was saying he’d love to support cooking classes;
  • A local who wants to build ‘street libraries’ to be scattered around the Bend;
  • A local who wants to do some small ‘greening The Bend’ actions.
The Bend would be responsible for coordinating the projects, but wouldn’t be personally involved in delivery.

 We would love to see those applications coming in so apply here.

 What’s in the plan?

Bend in the Road Inc has a lot of exciting projects and events in the pipeline both for the short term and into the next few years. See our strategic plan to get your head around some of these ideas.

Looking forward to seeing you again soon!
