Neighbourhood Watch in
Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby

eNewsletter #422 - 12 November 2019

This weekly eNewsletter is compiled by Neighbourhood Watch volunteers as a service for residents in Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby council areas. The eNewsletter is a new type of Neighbourhood Watch; utilising the available technology to keep people more connected and up-to-date with local crime and safety issues.

The eNewsletter includes a selection of posts from the
Ku-ring-gai PAC Facebook page (also known as 'eyewatch'), primarily for those not familiar with Facebook. We add anything interesting from a Neighbourhood Watch point-of-view - this could be a local newspaper article, a roadwork warning, crime prevention tip(s), an upcoming Neighbourhood Watch meeting, Q&As from residents, or an item from an other Police command ("Crooks know no boundaries!").

🚓 Have you seen anything we should share with the community? Please email our NHW in Ku-ring-gai & Hornsby volunteers. We do value your contributions. Thank you for your support.

12 November, from NSW Rural Fire Service

Catastrophic fire danger is now forecast for the Greater Sydney and Greater Hunter areas on Tuesday 12 November 2019, due to worsening weather conditions.

High temperatures, strong winds and low humidity are forecast, making conditions dangerous.

Catastrophic is the highest level of bush fire danger. Homes are not designed to withstand a fire under these conditions.

If a fire starts and takes hold during Catastrophic fire danger conditions, lives and homes will be at risk.

Advice for people in areas of Catastrophic fire danger include:
› Avoid bush fire prone areas. A safer area may be a large town or city, shopping centres or facilities well away from bushland areas.
› Schools in identified high risk areas will be closed. Schools will notify affected students. Start making arrangements now.
› If you are unable to leave, identify a safe location which may be nearby. This may include a Neighbourhood Safer Place.

Large areas of the state are also forecast to experience Severe and Extreme fire danger. This includes in the north coast and northern NSW areas, where there is a large number of fires already burning. These fires will not be contained in time and will threaten lives and properties.

Based on latest forecasts from the Bureau of Meteorology, the following fire danger ratings are expected on Tuesday. These are subject to change as forecasts are updated:
› Catastrophic – Greater Sydney and Greater Hunter (including the Blue Mountains and Central Coast areas)
› Extreme – North Coast, Illawarra/Shoalhaven, Central Ranges, Northern Slopes and North Western
› Severe – Far North Coast, New England, Far South Coast, Southern Ranges, Lower Central West Plains

This is the first time since new Fire Danger Ratings were introduced in 2009 that Catastrophic fire danger has been forecast for Sydney.

A statewide total fire ban has been declared for all areas of NSW for all of Monday and Tuesday.

10 November, from Kuring Gai Police Area Command

What a day!

It was bright and sunny, a gentle breeze rustling the leaves of the trees above; colourful and happy; parents with smiles on their faces and their children running around laughing and playing and in the background was the familiar aroma of sizzling sausages being cooked on the barbie.

A great day was had by all who attended Asquith Park at the invitation of Hornsby Shire Council. Invitations went out to some 2000 or more residents in the high-rise apartments in the shire, inviting them to the park to get to know their neighbours and some of their local support services.

A lot of interest was shown in the Kuring Gai Police Area Command’s “Command bus” – a police station on wheels. NSW rural fire Brigade was on hand, until they were called away to a fire. Neighbourhood Watch were out there promoting their services to the community.

There was face painting, “little police officers” running around playing police dress-ups, and others showing their wares and services they offer to the community.

An enthusiastic mention goes out to the Lions Club for their fabulous sausage sandwiches – 500 sausage sandwiches cooked and consumed in only two hours – thank you for feeding us all.

Now, as we know and as you’ve heard me say previously, we work and reside in a fantastic part of Sydney – we are the envy of many and our local council, Hornsby Shire Council, put on another great, free event for the community.

Thank you to all who attended – we had a great time and remember, please report crime and or suspicious behaviour as soon as or as close to the time of it occurring.

Ways to report crime:

“000” Triple zero for emergencies or life-threatening situations

“131 444” for non-emergencies

“1800 333 000” to provide crime information.

FIVE people were arrested and charged after police disrupted an alleged car rebirthing syndicate operating across north and southwest Sydney.

Last week, police executed search warrants at homes in Hornsby, The Ponds, Yagoona, Ermington and Dundas following a year-long investigation into the widespread theft, rebirthing and on-sale of stolen motor vehicles and vessels.

Three men — aged 20, 30 and 32 — were arrested during the operation and charged with various offences relating to the rebirthing of more than 25 motor vehicles with a combined value of more than $2.5 million and a number of vessels with a combined value of more than $280,000, as well as illicit drug supply.

During a search of the properties, officers seized more than $332,000 in cash, four vehicles, four boats, a motorcycle, mobile phones, knuckle dusters, firearms, electronic devices, documents and cocaine.

Investigations are continuing.

WAHROONGA

A Central Coast alleged member of the Bandidos outlaw motorcycle gang has been arrested following an alleged road rage assault at the intersection of the Pacific Highway and the M1 northbound in Wahroonga on Monday. The incident was allegedly sparked about 6.40pm when the driver of a silver Mazda 3 reportedly became angry when the car in front stopped at an amber light. The first car – a silver Volkswagen Golf – and the Mazda 3 stopped a short time later at the first emergency bay on the M1 at Wahroonga, and both drivers got out of their vehicles. The driver and sole occupant of the VW – a 29-year-old Central Coast man – was allegedly punched to the ground and kicked by two men from the Mazda 3. A passing motorist intervened and the occupants of the Mazda fled. The VW driver was taken to hospital for treatment for facial injuries and bruising. Following police investigations, a 32-year-old man from Morisset was arrested and charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm in company. Police are still seeking another man in relation to the incident.

MT COLAH

A 48-year-old man will face court later this month after being caught driving allegedly under the influence of drugs. At about 12.55am Sunday, November 3, a Padstow Heights man was driving along Ku-ring-gai Chase Rd in Mt Colah when he was stopped by police for a random breath test. Although the submitted breath test returned a negative reading, police allege the man had bloodshot eyes and seemed to be acting nervous. A mobile drug test was then carried out, with the man allegedly returning a positive result for cannabis and methamphetamine. A small bag of cannabis was also allegedly uncovered.

BEROWRA

Police are investigating after $300 in malicious damage was caused at Berowra Public School over the weekend. About 8am on Monday, November 4, a cleaner arrived at the school and noticed an alarm coming from the canteen. Although no entry had been forced, the cleaner noticed a number of graffiti tags had been spraypainted on a number of buildings throughout the school. They immediately contacted the school principal, who reported the damage to police.

BEROWRA

An 18-year-old man on a P-plate licence from Berowra has been issued with a court appearance notice after allegedly driving with a low-range blood alcohol level. At about 8.20am on Saturday, November 2, the man was pulled over by police for a random breath test. The provisional one driver allegedly returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.054. Police will allege he told police that he had drank 10 375ml bottles of beer the night before. He is scheduled to face Hornsby Local Court later this month.

BEROWRA

Police are investigating after a man smashed a poker machine at Berowra RSL. At about 9.20pm on Saturday, November 2, a man punched the screen of a poker machine, resulting in $2000 worth of damage. Police are reviewing CCTV footage of the incident.

ASQUITH

A 20-year-old man has had his provisional one drivers licence suspended after allegedly drink driving. At about 11.25pm on Friday, November 11, the man was driving along Peats Ferry Rd in Asquith when he was stopped for a random breath test. He allegedly returned a positive blood alcohol reading of .084. The man was immediately arrested and taken to Hornsby Police Station, where he was charged with midrange drink driving. He is scheduled to face Hornsby Local Court later this month.

09 November, from Ravi Balasubramanian, Mount Colah Neighbourhood Watch
Fellow residents - early this morning at around 3.10 am, we found a thief either trying to steal our car or searching for stuff inside. Luckily Sara heard it and when we switched on the lights, he ran away. The cops came quickly and took details. They said there have been reports of similar crime in our area. Lessons learnt - Please secure your cars, have cameras installed around your homes and make sure your house doors and windows are locked. It is important to have your loved ones safe in your own homes.

07 November, from Crime Stoppers NSW: PROTECTING YOUR CHILD FROM UNWANTED CONTACT

SERIES – PART 4 OF 4

What to do if my child experiences unwanted contact?

Your child may not tell you if an online ‘friendship’ has become compromising or difficult because they are embarrassed or ashamed, or afraid it might make things worse.

Be alert to worrying changes in your child's behaviour or mood. Watch for signs of withdrawal, anxiety, sadness or changed interactions with family or friends.

Stay calm and reassure your child they are not in trouble

✅ Explain that even adults get tricked
into doing things they regret.

✅ Talk to them without being judgemental
or angry.

✅ Do not cut off your child's internet
access, as they may see this as
punishment and not open up to you in
future.

COLLECT EVIDENCE

✅ Before you or your child block
someone or delete posts or other
material, take screenshots and collect
evidence, including dates and times.

REPORT

✅ Help your child block the person who
has made them uncomfortable and
report the unwanted contact to the
social media platform. The eSafety
Guide has links to report abusive
content and online safety centres.

✅ Grooming and procuring of children
over the internet are crimes
investigated by the police. If you have
encountered this kind of activity online,
contact your local police station.

You can make a confidential report online at Crime Stoppers or call 1800 333 000.

For more advice about keeping your child safe online visit this site.

06 November, from Ku-Ring-Gai SES

From Switzerland to Singapore, Emergency Service departments from around the globe are putting the contents of their vehicles on show for the #TetrisChallenge. The NSW SES Port Stephens Unit laid down the gauntlet, and we couldn’t wait to respond!

The game challenges players to arrange the contents of their emergency service vehicle into neat blocks in the way of the 1984 video game ‘Tetris'. The challenge also gives a nod to ‘knolling', the arrangement of items in parallel or 90 degree angles, so that the all of the objects can be seen in the final photograph.

So if you ever wanted to see what we carry in one of our rescue trucks, now’s your opportunity.
