Turmeric!
Did you know that less than 1% of curcumin (from turmeric) actually reaches the peripheral blood supply after oral ingestion? Although turmeric root has been studied and used medicinally for over 3,000 years, modern researchers have been mostly studying its main active constituent – curcumin. For that reason, researchers have come up with ways to make it more bioavailable and there are two main ways that is being done in supplements you will see in the marketplace. Again, I will go into more detail in my promised blog, but for now, when you are shopping for curcumin and/or turmeric, look for these things:

For every 500 mg of 95% curcumin extract (standardized) there should be 5 grams of BioPerine®, which is a patented form of black pepper that enhances absorption. Black pepper in and of itself has many beneficial properties for health and wellness.

Or – look for supplements called Longvida or a supplement that shows the curcumin extract is using Longvida, which is a lipid bubble (phytosome) to allow for greater absorption.

Read the websites for both Bioperine and Longvida for additional science and statistics. There is also the question of lead contamination. Consumerlab.com has done studies on specific supplements showing the amounts of curcumin that are actually in the supplements and if it is contaminated with lead. My blog should be finished soon that will go into much greater detail. So many of us waste our money on products that are basically worthless, which is why I continue to exert a lot of time into research about supplements.

Detoxification!
Every spring and fall most of us at least ponder for a minute if and how we could/should do a “detox”. It is always a good idea, but not in the ways that are often touted that simply put too much strain on our livers. Before even contemplating a detox, we should be thinking of ways to strengthen and support our livers. There are many things we can do and quite a few we shouldn’t do, but one of the best herbs available for supporting liver function is to find a good quality milk thistle seed – tincture is really the most effective, but there are supplements that are good as well. Silymarin, the active constituent in milk thistle seed helps protect and enhance our liver and adds good antioxidant protection. Again, there are many supplements available on the market, some of which are useless and some of which are good.
