A First! Indigenous Mayan Women Attend University!

From Guatemalan Villages to a World of Possibility
Chances for Children International provides university sponsorships for young Guatemalan womenImagine growing up not knowing where your next meal will come from...
Imagine growing up in an isolated mountainous area...
Imagine growing up and seeing loved ones work the land tirelessly, never able to provide enough for their families...
Now, imagine experiencing all of this as a small girl, expecting to never have a chance to change your life circumstances and live a life you choose.

CCI is giving young Mayan women these chances and much more! Now they can attend university, learn new skills, earn a degree, contribute to their communities, and live a life they dream of!

PROGRESA, our partner in Guatemala, supports 76 students in earning their university degrees. Aged 18-25, these students are enrolled in nursing, agronomy, education and medicine -- and a majority are young women. Some even come from the highlands of Guatemala, where Spanish is the second language, the first being a Mayan language, such as Ixil, Q’eqchi’ or Kaqchikel.

Confident smiles on the faces of these young women devoted to their college studies demonstrate the significant impact on their lives. Sponsorships from CCI donors, up to $1,000 a year per student, help enable these dedicated young women to obtain -- not just dream of -- a university education. Some grads have already made strides in giving back to their communities. Education is the ticket to a future filled with unlimited opportunities. Scroll down to read the exciting story of one student, Ana Lucrecia.
Raising the Bar for the Coming Year

With CCI’s donations, PROGRESA plans to fund 5 additional scholarship, giving more young women an opportunity to gain a college education. Each new student also will receive a laptop, which opens up her world.

CCI's year-end goal is to raise $5,500 needed for 5 additional young Mayan women to attend university. Here's how you can help us make this happen:
Ana Lucrecia is the New Face of Mayan Women!

Chances for Children sends young women to universityTwenty-three year old Ana Lucrecia is the determined daughter of subsistence farmers. Ana is studying sociology to understand and improve the realities of her life and her country. She analyzes complex social problems and the incongruities between life in the rural areas and the country's capital. Armed with her bachelor's degree, Ana plans to return to her rural community and create sustainable development programs. With the hope of pursuing a master's degree in economics, Ana wants to inspire youth like her to continue their education so they also can improve standards of living for all in their communities.
