Event Recap
WIIT Hosts Discussion on the U.S. - Japan Trade Agreement at Nov. 5 Event

On November 5, 2019, the Asia Pacific, Technology & Digital Economy, and Agriculture program sections of WIIT collaborated on a Trade Talk on the U.S.-Japan Trade Agreement with key officials from the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative. Hosted by BSA | The Software Alliance, the off-the-record lunch event which was sponsored by GR Group Asia, drew an engaged crowd from government, business, and the press.

Moderated by Bridgette Clark, Representative Director, GR Group Asia, the discussion featured Michael Beeman, Assistant USTR for Japan, Korea and APEC, as well as Daniel Bahar, Assistant USTR for Services and Investment. Mr. Beeman provided an overview of the status of the U.S.-Japan deal which was concluded on September 25 on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly meetings, and includes provisions in the areas of market access for certain agriculture and industrial goods, as well as digital trade. Mr. Bahar specifically focused on the digital trade part of the agreement in his remarks, and expanded his input on issues like the potential precedential effect on future trade negotiations, as well as the current WTO E-Commerce negotiations taking place in Geneva, in response to moderated questions from Sarah Skaluba, Policy Associate, BSA, and Eva Hampl, Senior Director, Investment, Trade and Financial Services, USCIB. The event concluded with remarks from Victoria Espinel, President and CEO of BSA.
