RWJF: Aligning Systems For Health
Aligning Systems for Health will explore the degree to which health equity is impacted or results from current models of collaboration incorporating health care, public health, and social services. Studies should include a focus on health equity by examining how cross-sector alignment can advance the opportunity for everyone to have a fair and just opportunity to be as healthy as possible. Request for Opioid Proposals
The Virginia Higher Education Opioid Consortium (VHEOC) is a collaboration of five Virginia public universities working together to support local efforts to prevent and treat opioid and other substance use disorders with cutting edge academic resources. Their mission is to assist Community Services Boards to address the opioid crisis.

Simple, one-page proposals are now being accepted, with awards expected to be announced in December. Click on the flier and required template for details. To learn more about the types of projects under consideration, contact Kathy Hosig or Mary Beth Dunkenberger.

Scholar Career Development Program
The Integrated Translational Health Research Institute of Virginia (iTHRIV) is a transformational collaboration across colleges at Virginia Tech in partnership with Carilion Clinic, the University of Virginia, and Inova Health System. iTHRIV is seek applications for early career faculty to be part of an inaugural cohort in their new Scholar Career Development program, which aims to facilitate the development of a successful clinical translational and/or clinical research career.  Click here for details.

New NIA Funding Opportunity for Elderly in Low Income Settings
The National Institutes on Aging invites R03 applications for research and development to improve functioning and quality of life for the elderly, whether they live in low-income countries or low-income regions in higher-income nations. Up to $100,000 available over two years. Click here for details.

TESS Now Providing Access to Youth Populations
Time-Sharing Experiments for the Social Sciences (TESS), with funding from the National Science Foundation, has been supporting general population experiments on behalf of investigators throughout the social sciences. TESS pays standard data collection and data dissemination costs, making access to national representative samples free for the investigators. TESS has announced a special opportunity for researchers to propose survey experiments with adolescent participants aged 13-17. Call for Proposals on Retirement and Disability Research
The Center for Retirement Research at Boston College sponsors the annual Steven H. Sandell Grant Program for scholars in the field of retirement and disability research. The program is funded by the U.S. Social Security Administration to provide opportunities for junior or non-tenured scholars from all academic disciplines to pursue cutting-edge projects on retirement or disability issues. Up to three grants of $45,000 will be awarded. Click here for details.

Human-Animal Interaction Research
The Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI) has issued a call for proposals for research on the health outcomes of pet ownership and/or animal-assisted activity or therapy, both for people and the animals involved. Proposals should have a strong theoretical framework and focus on innovative approaches to studying the health effects of companion animals on humans within three broad categories: child health and development; healthy aging; and mental and physical health and wellness. Five grants of up to $45,000 will be awarded. Click here for more details.

Diet, Plasticity and Memory: The Clock is Ticking
All are invited to a presentation by Dr. Karen Gamble from the University of Alabama School of Medicine who will be presenting as part of the Virginia Tech Life Sciences Seminars. Data and Decisions DDREAM Series Presentations
The Data & Decisions Destination Area will be hosting their second seminar in the DDREAM series on November 20, 2019 from 11:30-12:30 in the Newman Library Multipurpose Room. Miss Virginia headlines this year’s VT Science Festival & Nutshell Games
The Virginia Tech Science Festival will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Moss Arts Center, Carol M. Newman Library, Torgersen Hall, and along Alumni Mall. At 4:30 p.m. in the Anne and Ellen Fife Theatre in the Moss Arts Center, the Virginia Tech Center for Communicating Science will once again host the Nutshell Games, a science-based talks event for a public audience.
