Sajeela's story lit up our week!
After contracting polio at the age of 2, Sajeela, who lives in Pakistan, spent her childhood unable to move about without being carried. She did not receive her first wheelchair until she was 12. Although she completed primary education with flying colors, accessibility and cultural barriers made it very difficult for her to continue her education. With the support of her family and a huge amount of personal guts and determination, Sajeela was, finally, able to attend secondary school - but without a wheelchair. Undeterred, she still passed her exams with an A+. In the years since then, she has gone on to obtain graduate and post-graduate degrees in engineering from two esteemed universities in Pakistan, and a full-time government job, all the while either without a wheelchair at all, or with a chair unsuited to her needs.
So, it was a huge day recently, when Sajeela received a UCP Expression active wheelchair via our global wheelchair distribution hub CLASP Hub and properly-fitted by our fantastic service partner, Paraplegic Center Peshawar.
Not content with her achievements to date, "I am thinking of going for higher education," she says. "I feel I am stable now because my struggle to find the right wheelchair has finally ended. Now I can find the joys of life!"
