Asia Pop Speaker Series: Panel Discussion

Our new Asia Pop Speaker Series is concluding its series of fall semester lectures with a panel discussion focused on the role of fandom in K-pop. The discussion will be moderated by Dr. Seung-hwan Shin, professor of Korean Studies in the department of East Asian Languages and Literatures at Pitt. The panel will also feature three prominent members of the K-pop fandom in Pittsburgh: Elise Antel, the treasurer of the Japanese Culture Society who hosts Tekko, Carmen Kuo, the president of Pitt FRESA, and Tommy J. Yoo, the founder of "412 K-Town." Please join us on Thursday, November 21st at 5 PM in 229 Alcoa Room in the Barco Law School.
FOREIGN LANGUAGE & AREA STUDIES (FLAS) FELLOWSHIP INFO SESSION
The Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship, funded by the U.S. Department of Education, encourages undergraduate and graduate students to immerse themselves in intensive foreign language study. The Asian eligible languages offered at Pitt are Chinese, Korean, Japanese, and Vietnamese. To aid students in their intensive studies, the fellowship awards a tuition reimbursement and stipend, too. To learn more, please visit here and attend the information session on Tuesday, November 19th from 12 PM to 1 PM in the Global Hub. Applications are due by Friday, February 14th.
PAGE SPRING INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY
The Asian Studies Center is offering a 3 credit pre-professional internship for undergraduate students through the Partnership Advancing Globalized Education (PAGE) program. This internship is perfect for students who may be interested in overseeing and teaching Chinese language lessons to high school students. The intern will work closely with Pitt's School of Education. Preference will be given to applicants who are currently pursuing the Asian Studies Certificate and enrolled in second year Chinese classes or higher. CHINA TOWN HALL AT PITT-GREENSBURG
The National Committee finds it increasingly important to discuss the impact of U.S.-Sino relations on everyday Americans' lives. This year's webcast panel discussion will be moderated by Dr. Alan Juffs and will a panel of  U.S-China relations experts. During the town hall, viewers' pre-submitted questions will be answered, as well. SPRING 2020: TRANSNATIONAL ASIA CAPSTONE COURSE
From anime, K-pop, and Bollywood to global economic flows to political, religious, and ethical thought, the Global Asia Capstone Course (HIST1803) will look at how Asia is and has been a global phenomenon. Students enrolled will develop a research question and conduct primary and secondary research to produce a capstone project. The University Center for International Studies (UCIS) and Asian Studies Center's new transnational Asia capstone course for the upcoming Spring semester will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 AM to 11:15 AM.
