A first century Chan master is supposed to have come up with the Koan ‘If you meet the Buddha on the path, kill him.’ It’s intended to be shocking, and provocative. And it’s a thought I return to from time to time.

What it represents is an austere and apparently violent resistance to idolisation. Don’t be fooled into thinking that’s the Buddha walking towards you, it’s not. Kill that monster.

Meister Eckhart had a similar thought: “God, rid me of God.” He said. Get those ideas, those preconceptions, those idolatrous thoughts out of my brain. Get that Buddha out of my way, because that’s what is blocking the path to enlightenment. Get that idea of God out of my bonce, because it’s preventing me from seeing what is beyond.
