Occupied Palestine Gathers Its Olives

It’s autumn in Palestine. The olive trees - some of them centuries old - stand ready to provide their Palestinian farmers and families another season’s worth of their precious crop. In al-Khalil (Hebron) and the South Hebron Hills, the dedication of Palestinian olive growers to their work, and the challenges imposed by Israeli occupation are piercingly evident. Sukkot holidays lead to restrictions for Palestinians

The season of Jewish holidays that begins with Rosh Hashanah and ends with Sukkot  (30 September to 20 October 2019) is a troublesome period for Palestinians in Hebron. The activities of Israeli settlers in Hebron, and of the Israeli military that enables them, are disruptive, discriminatory and violent towards the Palestinians who live in the city.

Israeli settlers organized and held a Sukkot celebration in the area around the Ibrahimi Mosque in the H2 part of Hebron. Settlers from illegal Israeli settlements throughout the West Bank travelled to Kiryat Arba settlement and other Israeli settlements located within the Old City of Hebron. The Israeli military conducted multiple operations both within the Old City of Hebron, as well as H1 Hebron.

On 16 October, a group of Israeli soldiers exited Tel Rumeida Checkpoint 56 into Bab az-Zawiyeh and invaded a Palestinian butcher shop next to the military checkpoint, with the apparent intent to use the shop as a staging area. Continue reading.

These are the incidents that CPT has documented in the month of October. There are more incidents of human rights violations that have taken place in al-Khalil (Hebron) that other community members and human rights organizations have witnessed.

Palestinian women march through the Old City of Hebron holding banners advocating for breast cancer awareness and promoting a campaign by the Palestinian Health Ministry and Health Work Committees that offer free screenings for all women. However, when the women tried to enter the Ibrahimi Mosque area, some of them were not carrying their IDs, and the Israeli Border Police denied their entry. (1 October 2019)
Israeli soldiers stop Palestinian vehicles at the main intersection of Bab az-Zawiyeh. For about 40 minutes, Israeli forces closed Checkpoint 56 and stopped Palestinians walking and driving in the area for questioning, ID checks, and body searches. This incident took place in the midst of a week of Israeli military trainings conducted throughout Hebron. (10 October 2019)
Palestinians demonstrate against Israeli administrative detention and in support of prisoners on hunger strike. Demonstrators carry pictures of administrative detainees, including Ahmad Ghannam who is on his 93rd day of hunger strike against his administrative detention. "Ahmad doesn't want to add a record, he is suffering to get his freedom," says his father. (14 October 2019)
