Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in Latinx and POC Communities
Welcome back students, faculty, staff, y amigxs to the third edition of the monthly Aliento e-updates for this academic year!
Each month we provide updates, links, community events and resources while highlighting a mental health cause. This issue focuses on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. We also want to acknowledge that November is Native American Heritage Month.
Chisme academico: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in Latinx Communities
Psychologist Hector Garcia discusses ways to help Veterans with PTSD return to civilian life.
Dr. Susana Rivera translates trauma therapy for Hispanic and Latino Communities by incorporating concepts such as machismo, marianismo, and the values of respeto and simpatia into her treatment approaches.
"The high rates of victimization and exposure to trauma that unaccompanied refugee children experience, combined with limited access to mental health treatment services is likely to put them at higher risk for long-term consequences such as PTSD."
Aliento would like to honor the history of Native American people in California. Below is a map of the tribal communities on whose land we currently reside.
Check out the impact Aliento students made in Latinx communities through their practicum sites and community services projects during the 2018-2019 school year.
