The Friends of the Library Holiday Tea - ALL are welcome!

Wednesday, December 4 at 2 pm
On Wednesday, December 4 from 2 to 4, all Friends of the Jaffrey Library, patrons and staff, and book-lovers are invited to the 13th Annual Holiday Tea. The event will be held in the refurbished local history rooms on the History floor.  Tea parties are a staple in the works of many beloved authors, so it seems only fitting that the Friends Holiday Tea has become a festive tradition that brings people together for tea, sandwiches, cookies, cakes, and conversation.
At 3 pm, everyone will move to the Bean Room on the main floor for a brief annual meeting. The afternoon will close with storytelling for all ages by Julie and Andrea.
The Jaffrey Friends of the Library is a nonprofit group that works to strengthen, promote, and support our public library. It is committed to helping the library meet the diverse needs of the community and open doors to lifelong learning and discovery for everyone.
In the past few years, the Friends have helped fund Wi-Fi hotspots, the Mahjong program, Ancestry, museum passes, a charging station, special furniture, senior music programs, and a button maker for The Lab. The Friends also present at least two to three programs for adults each year.
Annual dues are currently $15 a year. Forms are available at the circulation desk. Dues and donations to the Friends are tax deductible.
ALL ARE WELCOME!

Green Cleaning with Essential Oils

Thursday, December 5 at 6:30 pm

Just in time for the holiday cleaning and gift-giving!
Did you know it is simple and cheap to make your own DIY cleaning products at home, using store cupboard ingredients and essential oils?
Learn the importance of reducing exposure to synthetics and toxins and see just how easy it is to make your own all natural cleaning products.
In this hands on workshop you can make an all-purpose cleaning spray.  Just bring your own reusable spray bottle.  We will provide all other ingredients.
In addition, we will go over how to make a soft scrub to clean your bathroom as well as teach you how to make your own room refreshing sprays (which are a great holiday gift giving idea). You will receive all the recipes, so that you can make these again and again on your own.
Presented by Sheilla Parkerson.
Please register for a headcount so we have enough supplies.  Please bring your own reusable spray bottle.
This event is free and open to the public.

Vault Comic Workshop with Marek Bennett
Saturday, December 7 from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM (with a free pizza break)

Back by popular demand!  Learn to create comics of your very own during this deep-dive workshop with professional graphic novelist and musician Marek Bennett. Marek's comics work includes the graphic novel series, The Civil War Diary of Freeman Colby, the local history webcomic LIVE FREE AND DRAW!, and the travel memoir, SLOVAKIA: Fall in the Heart of Europe. During this workshop we'll use artifacts from the library's VAULT to get the creative juices flowing as we blend history with art. A pizza lunch break will be provided in the afternoon.  Registration is REQUIRED.  Ages 12 and up.
Please visit our Giving Tree in the New Release Lobby and consider a small gift of Programming Supplies to support our Early Literacy programs and Make & Take Crafts.  (We go through a lot of glue sticks, googly eyes, pipe cleaners, sequins, etc.)  Thank you!
Could we be any more excited about the success of our new Sewing program?  Thank you to the Ledger-Transcript for the awesome article which shows how community partnerships and volunteerism make anything possible.

Programming breaks during the holidays

Some of our regular programs will take a brief break during the holiday season.  Please check our Event Calendar, follow us on Burbio, or give us a call at 532-7301 if you have a question regarding the schedule.

Home Delivery for the Winter Months

Our new program is underway
Thanks to the generosity of a wonderful volunteer, former trustee, and librarian, the library is able to offer home delivery in Jaffrey for the winter months, for our Jaffrey resident patrons who find it difficult to get out as the days get shorter.    Our new service is personalized to deliver up to five items at a time for a one month checkout.  Please contact Julie at 603-532-7301 if you would like to sign up for this free service.
We're also excited to announce that the Friends of the Library will be providing us with special tote bags for our book deliveries!

Hooked: Narratives of Addiction, Recovery, and Redemption

Saturday, January 11, 2020 at 1 pm
In the midst of New Hampshire’s opioid crisis, we are far from the time when addiction was an unfamiliar and even taboo subject. Narratives of addiction and recovery have become their own genre, with familiar shapes and forms that reflect deep cultural ideas about morality, free will, and social responsibility. The popularity of such narratives has created opportunities for empathy and understanding; they have also fostered particular beliefs about how addiction and recovery work. This talk will explore some of the most common stories about addiction, providing tools for understanding on a narrative and structural level. From this foundation, we will explore whether the familiarity of some stories might create barriers to recognizing different experiences of addiction or approaches to recovery, and think about where we might find more diverse accounts to inform our understanding of and response to addiction.

Presented by Katherine Gaudet, Associate Director of the University Honors Program at the University of New Hampshire, where she is also a member of the Humanities faculty. She has published on topics including suicide, bankruptcy, and education in early America. In 2015 she received a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to develop a course called “What Is a Criminal?” which has become a core offering in the Honors Program as well as the topic of the public Sidore Lecture Series for 2019-2020.
This event is brought to you thanks to a grant from New Hampshire Humanities, and co-sponsored with Reality Check.  It is free and open to the public.
