Red Cloud Community Foundation Fund Holds Community Visioning Session and Identifes 7 New Community Priorities; Seeks Year-End Donations

Members of the Red Cloud Community Foundation Fund (RCCFF) hosted a Community Visioning session facilitated by the Nebraska Community Foundation at the Red Cloud Community Center on Nov. 12th. Around 40 members of the community attended, including junior high and high school students of the newly formed Youth FAC committe led by Red Cloud High School Science teacher and RCCFF member Kim Ely. Robust discussion was had over a variety of issues, most of which folks agreed on but there were also many contentious issues such as the brick streets, truck routes, and eliminating nuisance housing. The process will help RCCFF as the group of community leaders decides which future projects to expend its time and talent coordinating and it will also help RCCFF identity which projects the community would like to see grants directed towards.

The process identified 7 new community visioning priorities, including creating a thriving downtown and enhanced recreation opportunities. See the full list in the flyer below. RCCFF will continue to support The Valley Child Development Center and Heritage Tourism Development but is hoping that with an expanded endowment and additional donations to soon be able to support additional community development projects.

You can help RCCFF by making a tax deductible donation of cash, agricultural commodities, stock, or a qualified charitable distribution from your IRA. If you'd like to help, please contact RCCFF leadership at 402-746-4202 or 402-746-4065 for more information. You can also go to the RCCFF page on the NCF website and donate online or click on the donation form at the bottom of this newsletter to download a PDF and send a check in the mail. Your donations will help now and for years to come.

Those of us who live in or are from the Red Cloud area know the value of our community and the quality of life that we enjoy today. It is a special place. Our forbearers built this town and maintained it; now it is our duty to keep it growing and progressing. With your help, RCCFF will make it happen. If you need further persuasion, just check out all of the amazing accomplishments RCCFF has achieved by looking at the flyer below:

Pure Nebraska Features On the Brix, the Starke Round Barn, the Willa Cather Memorial Prairie, and The M Guest House

Over the last two months, Red Cloud has been fortunate enough to have some airtime on a TV show treasured by many throughout the state: 10/11's Pure Nebraska.  Hosted by Jon Vanderford (pictured with Willa Cather Foundation Executive Director Ashley Olson below), the show features stories on what makes Nebraska such a great place to live and visit. In November, Pure Nebraska featured stories about On the Brix, the Starke Round Barn, the Willa Cather Memorial Prairie, and the M Guest House.  Click on the links in this paragraph to watch videos about the various locations!

Last month, Pure Nebraska featured stories on Hometown Market & The Valley Child Development Center as well as the Red Cloud B&B at the Kaley House. He also spoke with Tourism & Commerce Director Jarrod McCartney about the Hotel Garber Project (due to unanticipated delays, preliminary work will, hopefully, begin in 2020).

Vanderford will also do a story on the buildings recently reacquired by the Willa Cather Foundation, including the Pavelka Farmstead and the Burlington Depot. The Cather feature will air later in the year. Vanderford will likely return to Red Cloud in 2020 to do an "Our Town" feature on leading industries/employers.

Red Cloud Community Foundation Fund Announces Non-Traditional Scholarship Recipients

The Red Cloud Community Foundation Fund’s mission is to invest in the future of Red Cloud. Since RCCFF was created in 1995, awarding scholarships to graduating high school Seniors has been part of the foundation of RCCFF’s service to the community. However, in recent years, RCCFF has expanded the scope of its scholarship programs, awarding the John & Dorothy Sherwood Memorial Scholarship to non-traditional students who are seeking to pursue or are already engaged in the pursuit of higher education. In recent years, scholarships have been awarded to those working in education, nursing, and early childhood development. The most recent round of scholarships were awarded to Anissa Castor, Jackie Duffy, and Kim Armstrong at The Valley Child Development and to Brianna Beam.  Anissa, Jackie, and Kim are all enhancing their skillsets in Early Childhood Development at Central Community College or the University of Nebraska-Kearney. Brianna is pursuing a Master of Science in Nursing in the Family Nurse Practitioner Program at Clarkson College. Brianna says she is, “happy to receive this scholarship as it not only makes the financial burden of higher education easier to handle, but also gives me a sense of support from the community. This support makes me hopeful for a future career in Red Cloud and I am excited to be a part of the community’s continued growth.”

A storybook season came to an end a bit earlier than folks from Red Cloud would have liked, as the Warriors traveled to Eustis on Nov. 1st and fell by 1 point in the first round of the playoffs. KJ Daehling with a buck he harvested using a crossbow. Red Cloud is a great location for hunting, especially deer and turkey, and attracts hunters from all over the country. With rifle season having recently concluded, RC Tourism & Commerce wants to thank everyone for making this another safe and successful year. We hope to see everyone back in 2020!
