Travel Tips to Avoid Holiday Stress

  • Check FlyDenver.com for real-time information on security screening wait times and status of the airport’s parking lots.
  • TSA screening checkpoints are generally busiest from 5-10 am, and from 1-4 pm. Arrive at least two hours in advance for domestic flights.
  • A new drive-up bag check location has opened. To use the service, exit Peña Blvd. onto 75th Ave. and follow signs to the bag-check queue, where a greeter will remove the luggage from the car, check-in the passenger and even print boarding passes.

Free Ice Skating

  • Ice Rink on the Airport Plaza, open daily, 9 am - 9 pm through Jan. 20. Participants can pick up free skate rentals, then hit the ice before or after their flight. Info here
  • Downtown Denver Ice Rink at Skyline Park, open daily through Feb. 16. Skate rentals available. Info here.

Snow Shoveling & Snow Angels

Be a great neighbor! It is everyone’s responsibility to keep the sidewalks adjacent to their home or business clear and accessible. Businesses have 4 hours after the snow stops to shovel, and residents have 24 hours. Tips:
  • Use the shovel to push the snow; don't lift it.
  • Shovel early! When snow isn't shoveled, it gets packed down and becomes ice. Shoveling all the way to the pavement will also prevent ice from forming.
  • Shovel into your yard, so the snow plow doesn't push it back onto your sidewalk.
  • Shovel away from roadways and bike lanes, so plows don't push the snow back onto your sidewalks.
  • Salt can be damaging when it runs off into your lawn or the storm sewer with the snowmelt. Look for ecofriendly and pet-safe deicers.
  • Be proactive and come up with a plan for addressing sidewalks now, before it’s snowing.
If you or a neighbor is an older adult, living with a disability, temporarily ill, or physically unable to shovel their walk, please contact the Snow Angels to request help here or contact 720-913-8452 or snowangels@denvergov.org

Reduce Waste this Holiday Season

The average household generates 25% more waste between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day! Here are some tips to reduce waste:
  • Compost holiday leftovers, bones, dairy, vegetable scraps, and paper napkins. etc. Sign up at denvergov.org/compost.
  • The Natural Resources Defense Council’s Guestimator tool makes planning Thanksgiving and leftovers easy and waste free! Try it out at www.savethefood.com
  • Drop-off broken, burned out or impossibly tangled sets of holiday lights at the Cherry Creek Recycling Drop-off (S. Quebec Street and E. Cherry Creek South Drive). Recycle your holiday lights through January 18, 2020.
  • Most holiday food packaging, such as empty bottles, cans, cartons, and tubs are recyclable. Plain wrapping paper and holiday cards (no glitter or metallic material) can be placed in purple recycling carts too! (tissue paper is not recyclable.) For more information on what can and cannot be recycled, please visit denvergov.org/denverrecycles.
  • After the holidays, recycle your tree! Donated trees will be turned into mulch that residents can get for free at the annual Mulch Giveaway and Compost Sale! For more information, visit denvergov.org/treecycle.

  2. By phone
  3. By mail. Wait until you receive your paper form through the mail or dropped at your residence.
