The Cal-SOAP Connection

Cal-SOAP Fall Tutoring

Say hello to our 2019-2020 Cal-SOAP Tutors!
This year, Cal-SOAP has been able to hire 25 tutors to work at our sites. Many of our tutors are first-generation college students at UCSB and SBCC. The Cal-SOAP Tutoring Program has taken on a quote by Edmund Locard which states: “Every contact leaves a trace.” Our goal is to give a little piece of our knowledge that will stick with every student we help. A big thank you to our Site Liaisons and Teachers who work with us in order to make the Tutoring Program successful.

Tutor Spotlight

Favian Muralles

Our Cal-SOAP Tutor, Favian, is an Oxnard native who has been with Cal-SOAP since 2018. His passion for education began as a young child and has continued to grow into his adulthood. Favian is involved in various activities outside of Cal-SOAP. He volunteers his time at local elementary schools and is a coordinator at La Escuelita. He also volunteers at Cal Lutheran to teach students about college and aside from all of his activities, works part-time on campus. Favian studied abroad for 6 months and taught college students the English language. He is currently applying for graduate school with the goal of becoming a teacher. Favian has been an immense asset to Cal-SOAP and is greatly appreciated by all the students and staff at La Cuesta High School and PAL. Favian was chosen as Tutor of the Month in November for all his hard work and dedication as well as his great communication skills.

Campus Visits

Our Fall Campus Visits were highly successful with approximately 190 students from 7 local junior high and high schools visting their surrounding colleges and universities. Participating institutions included: SBCC, UCSB, Westmont, CSUCI, Cal Poly SLO, CSUN and USC. Students were able to receive brief presentations, tours of the campuses, and lunches in the dining commons for insight into the college life experience.

"Thank you so much for visiting USC! I hope you learned a lot about what USC has to offer and got to experience a taste of the Trojan family! <3 Good luck & Fight On!"

- MJ Kang, USC Student Ambassador

Financial Aid Presentations

This Fall, with the help of the Santa Barbara Scholarship Foundation, SBCC's Financial Aid Office and Westmont Financial Aid, we helped inform over 1200 seniors of the opportunities for financial aid through in-class presentations at our local campuses including Bishop Diego High School, Dos Pueblos High School, Santa Barbara High School, and Carpinteria High School.

Cash for College Workshops

Volunteers from Smart College Fund, SB Scholarship Foundation and SBCC in conjunction with Cal-SOAP staff assisted over 120 seniors with the FAFSA and CA Dream Act Applications during our evening workshops at Bishop Diego High School, San Marcos High School, Dos Pueblos High School, Santa Barbara High School, Carpinteria High School. Cal-SOAP will continue to host workshops at the local high schools and other education-based sites in the Spring of 2020.

Partner Spotlight

 Raúl Aguilera

Our Partner Spotlight this season goes to Raúl Aguilera, Program Advisor for the Santa Barbara Scholarship Foundation. Originally born in Jalisco, Mexico, he has now been living in the Goleta/Santa Barbara area since he was eight years old. Raúl is a first-generation student who has received his Bachelor’s from CSU Northridge and Master’s in Education from Cal Poly SLO. He plans to obtain an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership and Administration in the near future hoping to attend either UC Los Angeles or UC Davis. In the meantime, he enjoys working with students and parents, making sure that they have resources that he, himself, did not have when he attended college. Raúl has been an invaluable partner in volunteering for nearly all of our events including Financial Aid Presentations, Cash for College Workshops, and other school-related events such as College Night 2019. Thank you Raúl for all of your hard work and dedication for Cal-SOAP and our students!

A-OK!'s Lights On Event

Last month, A-OK! Goes to College hosted their Lights On After School event on October 24th at McKinley Elementary. Community organizations held classroom presentations with the overall objective on "how to support your students on their way to college". Cal-SOAP was able to distribute academic resources and educate dozens of parents on the 5 Systems of Higher Education in Spanish with English translation made available.

SBCC's College Night Event

On October 30th 2019, Cal-SOAP assisted SBCC in serving over 750 students and their families in speaking with college representatives from over 75 postsecondary institutions regarding admission requirements, academic courses, financial aid and college life. We thank all of our partners who contributed by giving the presentations encompassing local scholarships (SFSB), community colleges (SBCC), California State Universities (CSUCI), Universities of California (UCSB), and private universties (Westmont).
As always, we thank our partners and collaborators for all of their cooperation and assistance with our program and events. This season, we've been able to connect with many more students and parents throughout our community and contribute to our mission for education. Thanks and Happy Holidays!
