Physicists Around the World Build Upon UT's Pioneering Twistronics Research 

Scientists from Spain, the U.S., China, and Japan have now discovered that superconductivity can be turned on or off in twisted bilayer graphene with a small voltage change, increasing its usefulness for electronic devices. The discovery is a significant advance in an emerging field called Twistronics, whose pioneers include UT faculty Allan MacDonald and Emanuel Tutuc. Read more here.


UT to Launch New Institute on the Foundations of Data Science

UT has received a three-year National Science Foundation TRIPODS (Transdisciplinary Research in Principles of Data Science) award to establish a new institute on the foundations of data science. It will coordinate interdepartmental research in AI and data science, launch a large-scale workshop and signature seminar series, and provide seed funding for graduate and post-doctoral fellowships. Crystal Coatings Could Help Solve Mystery of Fracture Patterns

A research group led by UT’s Bureau of Economic Geology argues that mechanics alone is not enough to understand the implications of fractures, especially when it comes to energy. In a paper in the journal Review of Geophysics in August, they explain that scientists must consider the role of chemistry in their search for these fundamental questions. Read more here


KBH Center Hosts 4th Annual Symposium

On November 8, the Kay Bailey Hutchison Center for Energy, Law, & Business hosted its 4th Annual Symposium, held in conjunction with the 2019 McCombs Hall of Fame Dinner honoring the Center’s namesake, U.S. Ambassador to NATO Kay Bailey Hutchison. Topics discussed included energy demand, forecasting energy technology pathways, and the future of CCUS. Read more here.


Prof. Alex Huang Receives IEEE IAS Gerald Kliman Innovator Award

Dr. Alex Huang of UT's Electrical and Computer Engineering Department was named the recipient of the 2019 IEEE Industry Applications Society Gerald Kliman Innovator Award “for the development of Si and SiC high-power devices and the promotion of their industry applications.” Dr. Huang is a pioneer in promoting silicon and silicon carbide devices in power electronics. Symposium Highlights Environmental, Economic & Energy Research

The UT Bureau of Economic Geology hosted its first 3E Research Symposium for industry, state and federal agency representatives. Session topics and talks included carbon capture and storage, nanotechnology, water resources, and analytics and modeling applications. Read more here.
