November 2019

Here is another piece of Frome Bikeway infrastructure.  This 3m wide shared use path is on the western side of Frome Road, between War Memorial Drive and The Women’s and Children’s Hospital. Until a less intimidating path is provided south of War Memorial Drive, most people riding here will probably stay on road, using the bike lanes.
But it’s good to see more work on the bikeway.  We particularly appreciate the zebra crossing across the slip lane to Sir Edwin Smith Avenue.  And, we have been consulted about the next section of path. Onwards and upwards!

What we've been up to

  • Deputy Chair Ian Radbone and committee member Fay Patterson met with Opposition Road Safety spokesperson Lee Odenwalder to discuss BISA’s priorities for state government action.
  • Chair Katie Gilfillan used the opportunity of the opening of the Bike Kitchen’s new shop, to speak to Opposition Leader Peter Malinauskas about the Labor Party’s transport policies, including (of course) cycling.
  • Several committee members helped out as volunteers at the Australian Walking and Cycling Conference.  Ian Radbone and Fay Patterson gave presentations.

Frome Bikeway consultation

The City of Adelaide has released plans of the Bikeway from Rundle Street to North Terrace for consultation.

The plan is quite conceptual, not showing how driveway crossovers will be handled.  From the look of concept plan, it appears to be very similar to the section between Pirie Street and Rundle Street.  Click on the image below to see a larger version.
See the City Bikeways page on the ACC website.

Gawler Greenway developments

We have been intrigued to see signs for the Gawler Greenway suggesting you can ride to Elizabeth on it.  But the photo here of such a sign (on the southern side of the underpass of Regency Road) shows that DPTI doesn’t intend us to use it just yet.  (If you look carefully at the photo below you will see that a barrier has been placed across the path.)

If you don’ t let the barriers deter you, don’t mind riding with heavy vehicles, and you have a strong bike, you can ride all the way to the Salisbury Highway and beyond.
A bike path has been constructed along the western edge of the rail yards north of Islington.  (See photo below.)  The last bit before the Salisbury Highway / Port Wakefield Road intersection is a bush track, and one wonders why anyone would want to cycle to that destination anyway, but it’s good to see the trickiest part of the Gawler Greenway almost complete.

Bicycle Kitchen opens a shop

The Adelaide Bike Kitchen, 22 Gibson Street, Bowden now has a shop selling bike gear (including ABK-themed clothing), parts and second-hand bikes.  You can also get basic servicing done, e.g. replace a tube for $12.

The shop is open Wednesday to Friday, 1pm to 8pm, and on Saturday from 10am to 3pm.

Airbikes finally here

Airbikes are now in Adelaide, though not on the same scale as the previous Ofo and Obikes – or the Beam and Lime electric scooters.

However the mobile app suggests that there are still plenty in the City at least, and a few in the suburbs.

$1.30 will give you up to 30 minutes riding.  Despite the evidence of the photo below, they are meant to come with a helmet.

Cycling bridge over Goodwood Station shelved

Transport Minister Stephan Knoll has announced that the promised re-development of the tramway bridge over the Goodwood railway station to accommodate the Mike Turtur Bikeway will not go ahead in the near future.  The apparent reason is that costings for the development have blown out, from the $10m originally announced, to a claimed $28m.

As well as a blow to cyclists, this is a blow to improved disabled access to Goodwood Station.  One wonders how the compliance timeframes in the Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport will be met.

Meanwhile, an extra $87.5m has been provided to finish the upgrade of South Road at Darlington.  We were originally told this was to cost $620m.  The latest cost is $754.5m.  The new funding for Darlington was announced as part of a $399m raft of new road projects that will – we are told – “enhance liveability”.
