Our mission is to create a place to encounter Jesus. Steeped in love and Catholic teachings, we provide strong academics to foster continual learning in mind and spirit.

Dear SJB Families,

The Change Wars fundraiser for the Friends of San Lucas Mission is complete! We raised $941 for the mission's school, Colegio Monseñor Gregorio Schaffer! The change wars winner is our kindergarten class! The kindergartners' jar had a total of $181.59 in change, with a paper money amount of $67.  Way to go everyone!

This week we also remembered the baptisms of students baptized during the months of October and November. This is one of my favorite things we do to prepare the way of the Lord. Sister LaLande does such a beautiful job of planning these special occasions.

Finally this week we marked the end of the first trimester. Your child's first report card of the school year will come home on Wednesday of this week. Please watch for this in your child's backpack.

Please remember on Wednesday K-6 students will be dismissed two hours early (12:50 pm). Buses will run their normal routes, and there is no after school care.

Also on Wednesday, Mrs. Meger and Mrs. Gilmore will be holding their fall conferences with preschool and kindergarten readiness families. There is no school for preschool and kindergarten readiness students on Wednesday.
This week we will review lockdown procedures with our students. This will happen at the classroom level and at a safety assembly on Monday. Staff will review the two different types of lockdowns we use at St. John's with students. The first, "Lockdown with Warning" is used in situations when students must remain in their classrooms, but can continue with normal class activity. This might be used for a medical emergency or when there is a concern in the neighborhood. The other lockdown used for more serious situations is called a "Lockdown with Options." This means that the teacher decides based the on information she has if it is safest for her class to evacuate or "shelter in place." We practice these types of emergency response at least six times per school year. Each student is taught according to their developmental level. One text we use with our younger students is a picture book by Julia Cook called, "I'm not scared, I'm prepared."
Our Emergency Action Plan is reviewed every year and was created with the help of the Department of Homeland Security, the Scott County Sheriff's Department, and Jordan Police.
News from our Dedicated Committee Members
Alumni Committee
Our new Alumni Committee has been working hard to clean up our alumni database and reach out to our alumni to reestablish relationships and share the great things happening at St. John's. The first major project the committee tackled was the creation of an Alumni Newsletter. It is the goal of the committee to publish and send this in hard and electronic copies quarterly. The new newsletter is called, "The Voice." This comes from Isiah 40:3, A voice cries out:‘In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.

Enrollment Committee
Our enrollment committee has also been working on establishing relationships. Baptismal gifts are being prepared for the newly baptized in our parish. The committee is also working on ways to bring our community together and inviting the greater community to check out what we offer. One of the first ways this will happen is during our Catholic Schools Week Open House. Also, committee members are looking to beef up our social media presence to bring the good news about St. John's to a wider audience.

School Spirit Committee
Our School Spirit Committee is committed to connecting SJB families through social events, supporting our new families, and getting our name out to the larger community in a positive way. The committee is busy creating new spirit wear for students and adults, adding fun to Catholic Schools Week, and providing engaging opportunities during our Christmas Program. We thank them for the work they did to get us ready for the school year with photo opportunities at Back to School Night and decorating the gathering area to welcome students on their first days of school.

If you would like to join any of these talented groups, please contact Denise Weber at http://sjbjordanym@gmail.com.

This past week Ahlbrecht Masonry poured the footings for our new school & parish sign! We have been waiting for this project to move forward for some time! We know this will help us communicate with our greater community.
