The (Hardcore) Week That Was: So Much More Than Just Thrash

J. Hunter Bennett rules!

Monday Nov 18 - Hardcore Week day one featuring Agent Orange, The Adolescents, Circle Jerks and Black Flag. Rodney on the ROQ y'all!
Tuesday Nov. 19 - Going to the Midwest for Hardcore Week day two featuring The Meatmen, Negative Approach, The Necros and Zero Boys, among others.
Wednesday Nov. 20 -  All TSOL, all the time! Hardcore Week day three focuses on the changing style of TSOL. This one will open your eyes, peoples.
Thursday Nov. 21 - Hardcore Week day four in which we pop our heads into hardcore's big tent and listen to the Big Boys, Mentors and 9353, just to name three. There's plenty of room, so come on inside.
Friday Nov. 22 - Hardcore Week concludes with the week with a dewy-eyed (well, Patrick cried of course) look at the D.C. punk scene. We spell that harDCore, and yes, dc space's former location is a Starbucks now.
Positively Maxwell Street.

On Deck: Back to Normal, Whatever That is

Next week we are back with our usual hodgepodge of new music, books, patron calls and snappy banter. Just us being brilliant and all that stuff.

Monday Nov 25 - Little Stevie Routledge weighs in with his new music picks. Honestly, do you ever ask yourself how he manages to listen to so much cool music? Just don't stop, Steven!
Tuesday Nov. 26 - It's a very special book nook today! Patrick had a the chance to hop on the phone with author David Dann and talk about his fascinating new book about Micheal Bloomfield. You won't want to miss this.
Wednesday Nov. 27 - Our good Buddy Keith Jacobsen is on hand for some music chat, by way of Patron City. Bonnie "Prince" Billy (aka Will Oldham aka Palace Songs aka awesome) is one of the subjects we touch on.
Thursday Nov. 28 - NO SHOW. THANKSGIVING. STOP PLAYING RECORDS ALL DAY AND TALK TO YOUR FAMILY. (At least for a little while)
Friday Nov. 29 - Black Friday is here and we're officially into (gulp) xmas season. To mark the occasion, it's Mike Snider on the pod, talking about concert regrets. This one is gonna to spark some discussion, we thinks.

   Suburbs Pod Shoutout Corner©

This week we have to shout out to all the good people who repair things. Like those lovely souls who fixed up Patrick's ailing laptop, for example. It's back and cranking out the Friday newsletter better than ever. Thanks for your sharp skillz, repair people of the world!

Wayback Machine: They Shoulda Been Bigger!

To get yourself primed for Keith Jacobsen's appearance, take a short spin back to episode 631, when Keith came on to talk about bands that should have been bigger in the U.S. It's a stone cold jam.

Beck - Hyperspace (Capitol)
Beck’s 14th (!) studio album is mix between his two artistic sides: Mellow Beck meets Funky Beck. The subject matter here concerns the breakup of his marriage, but the music, in collaboration with Pharrell Williams, emphasizes the beats.

Leonard Cohen - Thanks for the Dance (Legacy)
The acclaimed singer-songwriter died in 2016. For this release, his son, Adam, collected some of Cohen’s unfinished works and enlisted help from Beck (!), Feist and the National’s Bryce Dessner to complete the project, which serves as a solemn tribute to one of popular music’s most powerful voices.

Grateful Dead - Ready or Not (self-released)
This is a live album of what was meant to be a studio album. Make sense? No. Here’s how it works: The band had been working on a new album for about three years before Jerry Garcia died in 1995. But as was Dead practice, they were already playing the new songs at shows. This album compiles nine live versions of those songs, so you can finally hear what might have been.

Various - Hanukkah+ (Verve Forecast/UMG)
The number of Christmas album released each year is bountiful. But rarely do we get a compilation that highlights the Jewish holiday. Hear such artists as Yo La Tengo, Haim, the Flaming Lips, Loudon Wainwright III and Jack Black perform Hanukkah favorites, new and old.
