Jamaica’s Myers is Radical Caribbean Champion

Jamaica’s William Myers is the new Radical Caribbean SR3 Cup (RCC) Champion, clinching the title in last weekend’s (November 16/17) final round at South Dakota, organised by the Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club (GMR&SC). In a text-book demonstration of consistency, he claimed the regional title in its second year, with nine podiums in the 12 races and fourth-placed finishes in the other three. Despite failing to win in his Rookie season, Myers beat Reigning Champion and three-time race-winner Stuart Maloney to the title by seven points.

The double Jamaica Race Drivers’ Club (JRDC) MP2 Champion had signalled his intentions from early, when he topped the times in the first of two Free Practice sessions at the opening RCC round at Bushy Park Barbados in April; always at the sharp end of the action, the newcomer finished third twice, then second in the day’s final race, ending the day second on points to Mark Maloney and establishing himself as a title challenger. Having never slipped below third in the standings and trailing Stuart Maloney by just one point ahead of last weekend’s finale, a trio of third-place finishes was enough for victory, bringing the regional series to an appropriate end with a Barbadian, a Jamaican and a Trinidadian finishing in the top three places following a final round staged in Guyana.

Racing at South Dakota for the first time, British F4 Champion Zane Maloney added two more victories to his round three Bushy Park hat-trick, making him the season’s most successful driver in terms of race wins, with five; it could have been six, but for he and his uncle Mark being excluded from the results of the final race for failing to attend the weighbridge after the finish. The GMR&SC also presented Zane with a plaque for setting a new outright lap record for the 0.78-mile circuit during Saturday Qualifying, at a time of 32.74s, representing an average speed of 85.75mph (137.99kmh).

Chef Aikens samples a Radical at Bushy Park

Acclaimed British chef Tom Aikens took time out from his culinary duties during the Barbados Food and Rum Festival to explore many of the island’s attractions, fitting in time enjoying leisure activities on the beach, a visit to St Nicholas Abbey . . . and a trip to Bushy Park to sample our Radical Drive Experience; all of this happened in late October, just as the previous issue of the Newsletter was being completed, so we had no time to include coverage of it then.

Aikens, who cooked a signature dinner at The Tides restaurant on the west coast, was one of a number of chefs and mixologists attracted to star in the 10th year of this island festival. With more than 25 years’ experience in the industry, Aikens has spent the last few years concentrating mainly on restaurant consultancy and planning new restaurants outside the UK. A keen charity supporter, he has also made various TV appearances in the UK, including stints on Saturday Kitchen, Market Kitchen, The Wright Stuff, Iron Chef and Great British Menu.

During his visit to Bushy Park, he was hosted by BPCI’s Senior Instructor Orry Hunte and Dylan Downie, with whom he discussed his previous experience, which includes having driven a Formula 1 car at the Paul Ricard circuit in France. Aikens (second right) is pictured with (from left) Lennon Chandler of Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc’s London office, Hunte, BPCI Operations Manager Amy Willis and Downie.

Adam Mallalieu is the BKA Champion Driver

Having finished runner-up twice, missing out by just a single point last year, Adam Mallalieu is the Barbados Karting Association’s (BKA) 2019 Champion Driver, ending the six-round season with a maximum score on November 3. Junior Champion in 2017, he has now won the Easykart 125cc Lights title for a second year, adding the BKA crown to his early-season victory in the inaugural Caribbean Junior Karting Academy Trophy (CJKAT). With 589 points, he beat Daniel Ullyett by 27 points, with Calem Maloney third on 531 points; Ullyett and Maloney were the Easykart 60cc Cadet and 100cc Junior champions respectively, while Kyle Catwell is the new 125cc Masters Champion.

After CJKAT, the first regional competition for rising young karters, occupied two of the BKA’s originally-scheduled eight race days, the calendar was trimmed to six weekends, but with four races at each, rather than three, to maintain the same number. Thirty drivers scored points in the Sectus Technologies-sponsored BKA Championship this year.

Mallalieu won all but two of the season’s 24 races, finishing second and third in the other two, claiming the class title from Kayleigh Catwell, who was a regular top three finisher, and John Kelly. While Ullyett’s 17 wins gave him a comfortable victory in the Cadet class, up from third last year, there was a mighty scrap for second, eventually won by Blake Thompson, three times a winner in the final two race weekends and fourth in the overall title chase. Although he didn’t win a Cadet race,
Donche Thompson finished third on points, just six ahead of Aeden Bruce, who had won four times in the first half of the season. Having finished second to Mallalieu in the early-season CJKAT, Calem Maloney won back-to-back BKA Junior titles, with 20 wins; the consistent Arron Blackett finished second (and sixth overall), with Logan Stollmeyer and four-time race-winner Adam Marshall next up.

McFarlane wins fifth BRC Autocross Championship

Jamaica’s Christopher McFarlane clinched his fifth consecutive BRC Autocross Championship title in the final round at Bushy Park on November 10. Driving his Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X FQ300, he ended the season in style, with the fastest time of the day (1m 11.07s) to also win the 4wd class by exactly 4secs from Geoffrey Ullyett, who was sharing the Evo, with four-time champion Omar Boodhoo (Subaru Impreza WRX) a close third (1:15.31). They are also the top three in the year-end 4wd standings, McFarlane the winner with 73 points. Ullyett second (67pts) and Boodhoo third (53pts).

On top of that, McFarlane and Ullyett finished the season as the top two in the 2wd class, sharing the latter’s familiar BMW M3, the Jamaican again scoring 73 points, with Ullyett on 63. Jody Forte (Subaru BRZ) finished third in 2wd with 53, which also placed him equal third with Boodhoo in the Overall Championship behind McFarlane and Ullyett, while Cheryl–Ann Hurley (Opel Corsa 1400) finished fifth on 52 points.

Hurley was also Ladies Champion, in the classes first season, beating Tricia Williams (Mitsubishi Colt, 30pts) and Merlisa Ince (Suzuki Swift, 24pts) to the title. In the other new class introduced for 2019, the Juniors, Adam Marshall (Mitsubishi Colt) prevailed with 37 points, ahead of Adam Mallalieu (Suzuki Swift, 12pts) and Chad Haynes (Subaru Impreza, 11pts).

A total of 29 competitors contested the finale, including some newcomers, bringing the total for the year to 50 participants, as the Championship has flourished at its new home of Bushy Park. Clerk of the Course Geoffrey Goddard said: “I would like to thank those persons who marshalled throughout the year, with a special mention to my assistant Clifton Pilgrim; the timekeepers, Jason Downey with assistance from Maurice Mason and Jonathon McFarlane; the time recorders Deborah McFarlane and Michelle King, who also looked after the signing in of competitors, and Omar Boodhoo who was responsible for scrutineering. I also would like to thank all of the competitors for making it a great year and look forward to 2020.”
