Winter's here!

So much rain during the Autumn and now cold, frosty & foggy! Hopefully this winter will not bring devastation from rain, wind or snow which we've had in the past. Here's a photo of Ernest Bradford and friends shovelling snow on Clay Lane, Peggs Green in 1947:

The Communal Bakehouse in disrepairCommunal Bakehouse on The Moor finally succumbed to the storms and the roof collapsed. It had been used for many years as a garden store. The Coleorton 2000 Committee (which later became the Coleorton Heritage Group) undertook the restoration of the building and the volunteers took the old Bakehouse from a ruin to a viable structure, completing it in December 2011.

It's the last surviving bakehouse building in Coleorton - there used to be four - and it was one of the first sites to be designated with the Coleorton Blue Plaque.

Coleorton Communal BakehouseSince restoration there has been concern over maintenance and long-term viability since it was still in private ownership.
Thankfully the owner was well aware of the value of the Bakehouse to the community and has transferred ownership to Coleorton Parish Council.
The Heritage Group will be working with the Parish Council on a plan to tidy the surrounding area, set up a maintenance schedule and provide an information board so the public can read about the history. We'd also like to restore the ovens if possible.

The Thatches is latest Blue Plaque site

The Thatches is on Stoney Lane just opposite the footpath through to the Woolrooms. Originally built around 1600, believed to have been the gamekeeper’s cottage for the Beaumont Estate. Grade II listed, it's the last remaining thatched cottage in Coleorton.
It's now the home of Coleorton Dog Groomers,

Beaumont family items

We have been loaned some interesting items from the Beaumont family. The last (12th) Baronet Beaumont died in 2011 without a male heir, so the baronetcy is now terminated. However, his two daughters still have fond memories and his daughter Francesca came to Coleorton a few weeks ago to visit her father's grave at St Mary's Church.

Francesca kindly offered us some Beaumont family items which we really appreciate and treasure. We intend to create a small exhibition with these and other Beaumont family items to share with Coleorton residents. More details in due course.
