Five new works are looked at in this issue:
- Shaxpeare-wash of Kertész Street – the new piece of Viktor Bodó at Örkény Theatre Budapest
- Two new pieces of Company Forte and Csaba Horváth: Auto-da-Fé and Away, No Matter Where
- One Percentage Native American of Látókép Ensemble and Szabolcs Hajdu
- Roma Heroes: a festival and a production, The Defectives, of Independent Theatre
I got to see three of the five last month: the Bodo wonderfully mad “Shaxpeare;” Csaba Horvath’s stunning opera collaboration Away; and the youthful Independent Theatre’s Defectives with Roma and non-Roma participants. Each of these widely diverse productions is a testament to the health of the independent theatre in Hungary
And next week, 17 US theatre folk will be in Budapest for dunaPart 5, offering a rich program of theatre and dance. I know each of them will return with stories. The list of our colleagues is found in the newsletter.
This edition also looks at the loss of funding with the abolition of the Corporate Tax Donation (TAO), a new funding initiative funded by The Open Society Foundation, and an update on the loss of the Central European University.
The issue closes with a major interview with Árpád Schilling by Andrea Tompa. Árpád left Hungary in the Spring of 2018 and now lives in a village in France. He really opens up with Andrea, and the interview is well worth the read.
This is our first Hungarian Letter of News after the National elections in October. You’ll be hearing more in the near future from us.
