A Talk by Tomas Gaertner, Building Biologist

On October 29th Tomas came to give a dozen or so Bridport Co-housing members a free talk about his work as an architect and Building Biologist. His firm is se3design in Somerset.

A big thank you to Devi who kindly loaned us her lovely home for the event.

From his viewpoint as a passivhaus designer, Tom gave us a very professional talk about modern, energy efficient and sustainable architecture for houses and public buildings such as schools and libraries.  As low-energy, high performance design is a primary inspiration for our development, we found his talk fascinating and instructive.

His specialty, Building Biology, developed as a result of the issues which are arising out of producing more energy efficient buildings which then become more sealed and less ventilated. This can produce health problems from more condensation and the growth of moulds. New materials such as insulating products and paints are often treated with different substances and can give rise to chemicals, gasses and toxins in the indoor environment. He also looks at possible health problems with electrical systems - electromagnetic and wifi stress, which have been associated with sleep and health problems in recent years.

A significant aspect of Tom's work is to assess external and internal factors which may affect human health either for new or existing buildings and recommend improvements. His goal is to design buildings and homes which are not only energy efficient but also healthy and uplifting spaces for people to live and work in.
