Ballard Multimodal Corridor

11/22/19 – Ballard Multimodal Corridor Construction Update

This week, eastbound traffic was shifted to the south side of NW Market St and westbound traffic was shifted to the north side of NW Market St between 24th and 26th avenues NW to accommodate center lane paving work. This allowed crews to pour the final section of concrete over a duct bank crossing on NW Market St between 24th and 26th avenues NW.

This week, crews began installing Metro trolley poles along NW Market St. Crews also installed temporary channelization markings on NW Market St, NW 54th St, and NW Locks Pl.

Work on NW 54th St and NW Locks Pl included curb preparation and sidewalk paving, trenching and conduit installation, landscape restoration, and pole foundation excavation and pouring.

As of Friday afternoon, one lane of traffic will be open in each direction on NW Market St, with center lane access available when possible. Crews will need to access the curb lane during work hours, which may affect parking, and will place no-parking signs as necessary. Changes in traffic flow are indicated in the graphic below.

Please take care when traveling through the work zone as lanes may shift.

Upcoming work

This schedule is weather-dependent and subject to change.

Crews will not be working on Thursday, November 28 and Friday, November 29, in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. We will provide the next construction update on Friday, December 6.

Next week, crews will continue installing Metro trolley poles on both sides of NW Market St, NW Locks Pl, and NW 54th St.

Crews are scheduled to continue installing conduit and electrical boxes on the north and south sides of NW Market St. Crews will shift traffic as necessary to accommodate this work.

Beginning as early as Monday, December 2nd, crews will install conduit at the 28th Ave NW and NW Market St and 24th Ave NW and NW Market St intersections. Crews will be working on the northeast and southeast corners of the 28th Ave NW intersection, and the northwest and northeast corners of the 24th Ave NW intersection. At both intersections, at least three crosswalks will remain open to pedestrian access during this work.

Conduit and pole work will cause an increase in pedestrian impacts. Please follow pedestrian detour signage placed along the project corridor.

As work continues along the project corridor and limits space for cyclists on the road, please remember to share the sidewalk and be aware of your surroundings.
Crews continue with sidewalk work on NW Locks Pl.
What to expect during construction
  • Typical work hours from 7 AM to 10 PM, Monday through Saturday
  • Crews may work some nights and weekends to minimize impacts to traffic during weekday commute times
  • On-street parking and lane restrictions near work locations
  • Temporary sidewalk and crosswalk closures with signed detours
  • Noise, dust, concrete odors, and vibration
  • Access to businesses and residences will remain open, driveway restrictions will apply
  • Work is weather dependent, so timing of work may change if needed
Stay connected Thanks for your patience and support while we complete this project. We’re working to minimize construction impacts as much as possible.

Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) Work on NW 54th St

Starting next week, a private developer is working with Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) to install a new utility crossing on NW 54th St between 24th Ave NW and 28th Ave NW. To accommodate this work, NW 54th St will be closed between 26th and 28th avenues NW. One lane will be maintained between 24th and 26th avenues NW, with flaggers alternating traffic as needed. 26th Ave NW will be local access only between NW Market St and NW 54th St. These traffic changes will go into effect beginning on Monday, November 25. The duration of this work is estimated at approximately 2 weeks.

Street Name Change

As of November 4th, the City of Seattle renamed a block of NW 54th St to help reduce confusion for emergency service providers. There were previously two intersections with the same street names: NW 54th St and NW Market St, 1.5 miles apart. Duplicate names create confusion for emergency response dispatchers and can delay response. The new name is "NW Locks Pl" in the location shown below on the image below.
