Every fall, Three Lakes and Riverside High Schools at Oak Creek Youth Correctional Facility welcome families for an evening of school fun. This year, 150 family members connected with their students and the staff at Three Lakes and Riverside High Schools to learn about what we offer at school. Family attendance has grown each year; last year, there were 100 family members at the event.
Families and students had an opportunity to meet Linn-Benton Community College representatives, paint pumpkins, decorate cookies, fill out college financial aid forms and admire the student work from our 3-D and Fabrication Labs classes. Families also took home laser-engraved frames decorated in the school’s new fabrication lab.
The school has continuously expanded opportunities for students, including over 260 college credits the students are taking this quarter. Four years ago, we had two certifications for vocational and academic opportunities. Today, we have over 19 certifications including flagging, forklift certification, dual credit for First Aid, CTECH, culinary and more. We have highly qualified teachers, a focus on credit remediation, digital equity and individualized instruction for all. It is an honor to work with such a delightful staff who cares about ensuring success for every student.
“All of our efforts are about helping students succeed,” said teacher Cindi Brokaw. “We understand that involving and partnering with families will help students be successful.”
Family response was enthusiastic.
“We love what you are doing here,” said a father at the event. “Thank you for getting my kid to like school – without you, she never would have even graduated from high school and now she’s in college.”
