Over/Under Newsletter - December 2019
The National Basketry Organization is an inclusive community of makers and enthusiasts whose purpose is to promote awareness, inspire creativity, and foster appreciation for the heritage and artistry of basketry.
What's New at NBO

It’s hard for me to believe that we’ve almost reached the end of 2019! Where did this year go? This is a wonderful time for reflecting on what we have accomplished and what there is to look forward to.

For the first time in three years NBO will have a six-month period without any exhibits. Rooted, Revived, Reinvented: Basketry in America has finished traveling across the country in December. It is now on its way back to the University of Missouri. Once there the crates it traveled in will be unpacked, and each piece will be packed and sent back to the basket maker who created it. Collaborating with the University of Missouri Museum of Art and Archaeology, with special assistance from MU’s Departments of Art, Art Education, and Art History and Archaeology has been a wonderful learning experience for everyone involved on all levels.

Basketry Now 10 has closed at the Kentucky Museum. You can still view it on our website through December 31 and order a catalogue for that last minute present.

Take a look below at our farewell to the five NBO departing Board Members. We all think they are special people who devoted countless hours of volunteer time to NBO. They, along with all the other Board Members, are the reason we are the vibrant organization that exists today. In January I’ll introduce you to our four new Board Members. Each of them will bring their talent and skills to keep NBO moving forward.

The Members In Print exhibition entry time is from February 1 to March 15, 2020. You can see the prospectus with all the pertinent information to inspire your creativity so you’re prepared to enter through the CaFE system: Members In Print

Wishing you and your family the Happiest of Holidays!

Thank You Outgoing NBO Board Members!

At the end of December, we will be saying goodbye to five wonderful NBO Board Members. Each one of them has brought their unique talents, skills and passion for basketry to us over their years on the Board of Directors.

Jo Cambell-Amsler has had her hands in many different committees and projects during her years on the Board. She has been the Instructor Liaison for both the 2017 & 2019 Conferences. Jo has chaired the Membership Committee for several years guiding it strategically to increase our membership and monitoring trends while thinking creatively.

Katherine Lewis brought her thoughtfulness and attention to detail to everything she touched. As the Chair of the Communications Committee she kept us focused and moving forward on multiple fronts including Basketry+, Social Media postings and making sure the financial numbers always made sense to her.

Amanda Salm (above, letf)  brought her quiet yet strong voice to everything she was involved with. Mandy was the Exhibit Committee Chair and brought us the first Members In Print Exhibit, the All Things Considered 9 and Basketry Now exhibits and beautiful catalogues that accompanied those exhibits. She also was responsible for both the live and silent auctions at this summer’s conference.

Marilyn Moore (above, right)  took on the incredible task of being the 2019 Conference Committee Co-Chair. She put in countless hours over a year and a half to bring everyone one at the conference the best possible experience. Her ability to juggle so many balls was amazing.

Andrea DuFlon shared her graphic design skills with both the Communications and Branding Committees. She helped NBO take a fresh look at our magazine and various media presence during our rebranding process.

This list of activities represents the highlights of their work on the NBO Board. As you can see from all the accomplishments of our departing board members, they are a hard act to follow and all of us will miss them. At the same time, we are looking forward to the new board members joining us in January.
