the health benefits of gratitude
Hi Friend,

As we enter Thanksgiving week here in the United States, many of us are turning more of our attention to those people and things for which we are grateful.

Thanksgiving perhaps is my favorite holiday, because it's not overly commercial, it involves food (and I love to eat good food), and it brings together some of the people closest to me.

My husband and I typically start Thanksgiving Day early, running in a local 8k "turkey trot" race. When we return home, I turn on the TV to watch/listen to the Thanksgiving Day parade in New York City while I start preparing some of the food for our evening meal.

My goal is to incorporate mindfulness and gratitude throughout my day, even before everyone else arrives and we say a dinner blessing. I love that we have a day set aside to focus on our thankfulness.

Extensive research shows gratitude is good for us.  It benefits our minds and bodies, helping us to manage our emotions and ease our stress.

And, it turns out, it's especially good for us if it's practiced more often than only the fourth Thursday of November.

Do you have a formal gratitude practice, such as keeping a gratitude journal or writing thank you notes regularly? If you do, I'd love to hear about it. You can hit reply and send me a note.

And if you don't have a gratitude practice the other 364 days of the year, here are some ideas for practicing gratitude beyond Thanksgiving.

Any way you celebrate next Thursday, I hope you have a wonderful day. I appreciate you opening these emails each week and being part of my community.

Happy Thanksgiving.

With grace and space for a healthier you,
amy
What's on your Thanksgiving table?

Last year, I used this stuffing recipe and substituted gluten-free bread (I prefer Schar's, or a local bakery's). It was delicious, so I think I'll be making it again.

If you're not trying to avoid sugar, here's my favorite Marbled Pumpkin Cheesecake recipe, in which I use gluten-free gingersnap cookies for the crust.

And for balance, we also will cook a turkey, make Southern (soggy) green beans, and assemble a green salad.

What are some of your Thanksgiving favorites?
