CHANGING LIVES IN TANZANIA | HOLIDAY 2019

Miracle stories: What hard work and love can do

During the holidays we celebrate miracles in our lives. Here's one. Esther Ryoba was 12 when she and her sister Neema were orphaned. (They're pictured in 2010.) They were accompanying their mother's body for burial when their bus crashed in Arusha. LOHADA director Happiness Wambura rushed to the scene; the girls found a new home at Camp Joshua. Sponsors supported both girls through college. More than a decade since they came, Esther is a nurse working in LOHADA's Golden Grace Clinic. Neema is a teacher at Camp Joshua School. These sisters are a testament to how God works through supporters like you to change a child's tragedy into a beautiful new reality.

More miracles: Twins Joyce and Jonesta Richard, with LOHADA since they were five, are now social workers at Camp Joshua. And, after never before attending school, former nightwatchman Living Oisso sat in on classes and graduated from Camp Joshua School. A very determined worker, he learned to drive and has become an ambulance driver for Golden Grace Health Center.
What's this we see? LOHADA kids with glasses?! Jessie McLean demonstrates for this little one the difference prescription eyewear can make. Thanks to Eye Care for Africa and our friends in New Zealand for helping our kids see SO MUCH BETTER!
Speaking of seeing better...

Thanks to Ohio State University engineering students, who installed solar panels on the boys' dorm in May, allowing our guys to have light in their dorms to study by. This is the first of several education abroad trips to LOHADA for Ohio State. We love the Buckeyes!
Helping children cope with grief

Too many children at LOHADA have lost parents to AIDS, illness and accidents. Meeting a tremendous need,  Bay Hope Church and the counselors from Suncoast Kids Place hosted a grief counseling workshop for 60 professionals who deal with orphans in the Arusha area. Under their guidance, LOHADA is opening a grief clinic to help children at Camp Joshua. Thank you, Florida friends, for making the conference happen. "It was life changing," said director Happiness Wambura.
New classroom, new sponsor

Even though this classroom honoring Eleonora Contin has been finished since July, friends and family continue to give. Four-year-old Samuel, who will be taught in the class, was sponsored by friends Sara Marino and Danilo Curti. Money for books was raised by preschool teachers in Italy, including Eleonora's mother-in-law, Lucia Fusi. All that love now provides a space for little ones to learn and grow. Special thanks to Matteo Gobbi, and his employer, Novartis, for a donation toward the classroom.
Chapel Hill Freewill Baptist Church came in August to host a vacation Bible school, and brought a special gift to the kids. Chapel Hill is renown in Ohio for hosting volleyball tournaments, and they were happy to give LOHADA kids some lessons. And they left behind professional-quality volleyball nets and balls.
LOHADA's Golden Grace is building a surgical center and dorms for visiting medical professionals, including residents from Ohio State University who will come in January. The mobile clinic began serving rural communities in western Tanzania in late summer. Donations are needed for the apartments' furniture and hospital beds, which cost about $200 each. See Golden Grace Clinic.
We're so grateful for these gifts

Special thanks to Calvary Alive Church and Rob Rose for donating funds for new mattresses and 100 mosquito nets for the children and for hosting a vacation Bible school for the kids! Also our heartfelt gratitude to Lloyd and Sharon Passey, for donating the gorgeous blue dining hall roof and tables.

Thanks to Baida Ashamallah, Laurie Pearlman, James Potter, Judson Feder and those who donated in honor of Dr. Gamil Ashamalla. Laurie also donated in memory of an amazing teacher, Carolee Jean Briley.

Thanks to Rosemarie Ashamalla for paying the college tuition of Christina. And our appreciation to Marty Kress and Ohio State University for their commitment to LOHADA and to Tanzania.

We are so grateful for the generous donations by St. Matthew's Episcopal Day SchoolKen Vandermark, Diane and Dave Engelhardt, Sandi and Dan SmithFrancis Morris, Kubik Consulting, Ceilidhe WynnJanet Bray, Iliari Conforti, Zdenka Haskova, Lydia Antippas, Michelle Engelhardt, Janet Ciccone, Laura Hill, Solomon Minywab and the friends of Alicia Humpbert who donated for her birthday.

Thanks always for support from Chapel Hill Freewill Baptist Church and Bay Hope Church, and to Greg and Tricia Allenby for their amazing support of health initiatives at Golden Grace.
Sponsor A Child
NOTHING BEATS THIS GIFT

Consider giving in a way that forever changes the life of a child. LOHADA's greatest needs are for teacher/caretaker salaries and food. Sponsoring a child covers those needs: at the Silver Level, $38 a month; at the Gold Level, $50 a month; or for a teacher salary, at $100 per month. Do it by Dec. 15 and we will send a special card to the person you honor with your truly impactful gift.
