July at Skålestrømmen

The first two weeks in July are the most popular amongst the fishermen in the north. One reason might be that the weather tends to be more stable.

The hatches are prolific and the fish are feeding at the surface. The large mayflies hatch during the 2 first weeks. Later large caddis are added to the mix. It can be pretty crazy with several species of mayflies and caddis hatching all at once during the bright nights.

Discussing flies and fly tying is one of the activities at the hut.
Others may be fishing though. Trout are rising very close to the hut too.
Sizing the one the got off the hook?
Fishing the bright nights is an unforgettable experience.
The Deer Hair Caddis. Simple and effective.
The parachute mayfly can be tied in many sizes and colours to match the hatch.

Having been flyfishing in Norway each summer since 2004, I have visited many rivers and lakes and had many a good days fishing. However, I have never been fishing a place like the Skålestrømmen, with so many rising trouts and with such a high quality of trout!

Those days I/we fished the Skålestrømmen, have been the best flyfishing I have had in Norway and the most fun as well. Night fishing is especially awesome , where big caddis hatching brings out the big trout and char, and of course the big one got away due to a hook failure. So remember strong barbless hooks !

I can highly recommend visiting Skålestrømmen for serious trout flyfishing.
