Last month, CNoS hosted the Ways of Working workshop at the Experimental Studio, BALTIC 39. Focusing on process not outcome, practitioners from arts, sciences and humanities shared their working methods and explored collaborative practice in both the studio and the lab. Attentiveness to the similarities and differences in method was a central focus of the event, leading to insights in use of structure (or lack of it), process and creative tools. With thanks to all who attended and to the Biochemical Society and Newcastle University’s Institute for Creative Arts Practice for supporting this event.
Louise Mackenzie's thesis abstract, 'Evolution of the Subject - Synthetic Biology in Fine Art Practice', has been selected as one of the top ranked abstracts this year for a special publication of Leonardo Journal. The publication is now available online and will be forthcoming in print next October.
Daksha Patel has been selected for an upcoming conference at the University of Central Lancaster in January 2020: Drawing Conversations 3: Drawing Talking to the Sciences. Daksha will present ‘Misprints’, the outcome of her residency at Life Science, University of Dundee, and will show the video ‘Active [Drawing] Matter’, the outcome of a residency in Applied Maths, University of Bristol, as part of the conference exhibition.

Common Care
A programme of hands-on tours at Glasgow Museums Stores (GMRC) initiated around the deinstall and storage of 'I Say Nothing' by Christine Borland at Kelvingrove Museum, Glasgow. The tours have been devised by Conservator Stephanie de Roemer in collaboration with Christine Borland, to open up the usually ‘invisible’ processes and practices of conservation care. This opening up serves as a means to negotiate urgent ethical considerations around material culture, including the museum’s responsibility for society and the environment, as opposed to the preservation of ‘treasures’ in storage.
The tours are free. Dates: Tues 2 – 4pm; 10th Dec, 21st Jan 2020, 18th Feb 2020, 10th March 2020. Very limited numbers; further details & booking only via stephanie.deroemer@glasgowlife.org.uk

Beyond Fieldwork workshop and public event
Beyond Fieldwork is a two-day workshop organised by Laura Harrington that will explore the notion of ‘fieldwork’ in non-urban areas in relation to artistic practice, research, knowledge and understanding. Through a range of presentations and direct engagements with the field this workshop is designed to explore and further understand what goes on when artists work in the field and in what ways this can be utilised in the context of practice-led research.
The workshop will be held on Thursday 5 December in BALTIC 39 Experimental Studio and at ACA (Allenheads Contemporary Arts) on Friday 6 December. A free film screening event featuring work by London Fieldworks, Matterlurgy and Simone Kenyon will take place at 6.30 on Thursday 5 December which is open to all.

Tales from the Crust, an exhibition by London-based Chilean artist Ignacio Acosta investigating the politics of extraction across the planet, continues at Arts Catalyst in London until 14 December.
A two-day symposium exploring the exhibition's themes takes place on 29/30 November at the University of Westminster.

** Rather last minute, but for anyone in Manchester, Super/Collider are hosting solargraph workshops on Wednesday 27 November as part of the Sun exhibition free Late night at the Science and Industry Museum.
** In Berlin, Invisible Forces presents the work of Erich Berger and Mari Keto alongside a workshop and forensic exhibition by Martin Howse—all to do with radiation, contemporary culture, deep (geological) time and psycho-geophysics. Until 8 December.
** Artists Becky Lyon and Saroj Patel offer hopeful visions of alternative ecologies in their exhibition opening on 6 December at TENSION Fine Art in London: life.formed: Shapes of Non-Human Ecologies. Until 15 January, 2020.
** The wonderfully-titled exhibition, Viridescent Epiphyte, opens at The Briggait in Glasgow on 7 December. Artists Emma Hislop and Matthew Rimmer will show work that ranges across an interesting spectrum of related ideas including bioremediation, viridescence, and constructed ecosystems. Until 3 January 2020.
** Plastic—Can't Live With It, Can't Live Without it, Science Gallery Dublin's exhibition on the increasingly-beleaguered material continues until February next year.

=> Closing soon: European Media Artists in Residence Exchange has announced an open call for two-month residencies in 2020 and 2021 for European artists working in the fields of digital media, sound of video art, media-based performance, robotics or bio-art. Applications are being accepted for proposals to one of eleven institutions across Europe. Deadline for submissions is 2 December 2019. More information here.
