RESTORATIVE JUSTICE WEEK 2019

#RJWEEK
#EFRJ2019
@euforumrj
Plentiful events were held the last week, from Greece to Norway and from Nepal to Mexico celebrating the contribution of restorative justice to our societies and advocating for making use of its potential more fully. Our calendar lists more than 80 events from around the globe.
We are delighted by the increasing number of events on consequent Restorative Justice Weeks and by the variety of the content organised by our members.
This year the primary activities of the EFRJ's team were organised in the online space. Did you miss something? No problem: here we collected what we shared throughout this week!

Why Restorative Justice Matters... ?
Watch the videos of our campaign together: throughout the week we shared each day a video highlighting an application of restorative justice or an approach to its practice. In these short videos Board members of the EFRJ and our Executive Director discuss how restorative justice can be beneficial in so many different regards.
Feel free to share these videos or use them on your future events!

...in Today's Societies?
Why restorative justice matters in today’s societies? Because respect for human dignity matters, solidarity within diverse societies matters, justice matters and truth matters. Our chair, Tim Chapman talks in this video about the human values which are needed to maintain peaceful societies and undo injustices.

...in Europe?

Why restorative justice matters in Europe? Because it empowers people, gives a voice to victims, prevents re-offending, and reduces the costs of the criminal justice system. Furthermore, it is supported in many international instruments. In this video our director, Edit Törzs explains the importance of restorative justice for achieving justice and security in a complex Europe.

...in Children's Rights?
The World Children's Day (21 November) took place during the international RJ Week. In this video, our vice chair Annemieke Wolthuis refers to restorative justice as a child's right, as mentioned in many international human rights instruments from the United Nations, Council of Europe and European Commission.

 ...in the Criminal Justice System?

Why restorative justice matters in the criminal justice system? Because it contributes to bring justice closer to people, making it a tangible value which reflects people’s needs and expectations. In this video, Board member Roberto Moreno refers to the thoughts of Nils Christie looking at conflict and crime as something taken away from citizens.

...in Desistance from Crime?
Why restorative justice matters in desistance from crime? Because restorative justice is a practice that supports people not to re-offend but to find a space to reintegrate in society. In the video Board member Bart Claes explains the importance of restorative justice practices in all stages of the criminal justice process, including during and after detention.

 ...for Communities?

Why restorative justice matters for communities? Because in our daily life, we all need to feel safe, not because of external controls, but thanks to the relationships built with others. In the video Board member Patrizia Patrizi calls for a cultural change to overcome prejudices and strengthen values such as solidarity, respect, responsibility, and justice in our communities.

+1: Environmental Justice
We are closing the RJ Week by launching a booklet (see in the following paragraph of the newsflash) about the role that restorative justice can play in one of the most pressing issues of our time: environmental justice. To introduce the publication, Board member Brunilda Pali, co-editor of the booklet, talks about restorative environmental justice in this video. This is addition to our "Why Restorative Justice Matters?" campaign shows our strong belief to explore further areas where restorative justice can be used as a key element to find solutions to our most fundamental challenges.

Environmental Justice: Restoring the Future

We are proud to share our new publication, a booklet edited by Brunilda Pali and Emanuela Biffi: “Environmental Justice: Restoring the Future. Towards a restorative environmental justice praxis”. It is a collection of theoretical reflections, pioneering experiences as well as activism and art projects written by practitioners, activists, artists, young people, scholars and scientists committed to restorative principles and practices as ways to do justice in harmed environments and communities affected by environmental damages. The booklet follows our publication from the Restorative Justice Week 2017 about arts and restorative justice, which was very popular. Get your digital copy of the booklet for free!

International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women
25 November is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Just one sentence about the scale of the problem: in Europe one in three women has experienced physical and/or sexual violence since the age of fifteen according to the survey of the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights.  In the past years the EFRJ has been involved on different projects relevant to this topic, such as domestic violence and sexual violence, showing the potential and challenges for using restorative justice in these cases.

Moment of Inspiration
during the #RJWeek

Together with our organisational member Moderator, we hosted the screening of François Kohler's documentary "Je ne te voyais pas" and an after-talk with the director and two participants of the film. The film follows different cases and presents them at different stages of the mediation process in Belgium together with a pilot project from Switzerland, which brings together victims and offenders from different cases. The film will be first released in Switzerland in a few weeks from now, and it will come come to several European countries in the coming months, so it is worth to follow the news about it on its Facebook page.

Next week: Meetings in Leuven
And we do not stop! This week will be  busy and exciting for us, as we welcome the members of our Restorative Justice Policy Network, our Committees and Working Groups and our Board in a series of gatherings in Leuven! We are looking forward to meeting so many of you person! We will keep you posted about the news on social media!
