YSRP is Thankful for the Power of Community
Former Juvenile Lifers, YSRP staff, community partners and loved ones celebrate community at a cookout in Philadelphia on September 15, 2019.   Photographs graciously provided by Johnny Myers.
Dear friend,

The community of former Juvenile Lifers, now home in Philadelphia, is strong.
On a sunny day in September, we celebrated one another, and the power of our community with abundant food, freedom, and joy. That Sunday, the dignity and strength of this community was on full display. We look forward to more celebrations like this in the coming year.

The same day, an article ran in The Atlantic that beautifully tells the story of Haywood “Red Dog” Fennell, a former Juvenile Lifer now home after 46 years of incarceration. Thomas Roach, pictured above (center), mentioned in the article, joined us at the cookout with his wife (right).

The story also highlights YSRP’s reentry work with former Juvenile Lifers, lifting up the PA JLWOP Reentry Navigator, and quoting John Pace, YSRP’s Juvenile Life Without Parole (JLWOP) Reentry Coordinator, who says that he wants to move the focus beyond meeting basic needs, to where formerly-incarcerated people are actually thriving:

“I don’t want to be in survival mode.”

As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, we at YSRP share gratitude for you -- our partners and supporters -- who join with us in our belief that children do not belong in adult jails or prisons, and that people deserve to return home and live full lives with dignity.

When you give to YSRP, you affirm the humanity of people who were locked away for life as children. Your gifts have made it possible for former Juvenile Lifers to spend Thanksgiving surrounded by their loved ones - outside of prison walls. Your gifts can support former Juvenile Lifers in finding pathways to thrive.

This holiday season, we also hold near our youth and Juvenile Lifer client-partners who are currently incarcerated, and their families who are missing members during the holidays.

Best wishes for a healthy and joyous holiday from our YSRP family to yours,

Annie, Cameron, Eleanor, Emily, Joanna, John, Katie & Lauren
