December - Time does fly, 2019 nearly over!
Our main message to you right now is that there is still time to participate with TREA’s 12 day Christmas online silent auction on Facebook.  It runs until Friday December 6th. Please give it a visit.
November was a significant month locally with-
  • the visit from Dianne Saxe discussing the realities of climate change,
  • City Council acknowledging a climate emergency plan and a goal of net-zero greenhouse emissions by 2050,
  • a new City hire,  Sustainability and Resiliency Manager Mike Fabro, already a part of the Climate Emergency proposed planning
  • the engagement of Londoners from 9 neighbourhoods in the London Hefty® EnergyBag® Pilot Project expected to encompass approximately 13,000 households,
  • Director of City Planning John Fleming’s resignation following 30 years of service and vision for London and
  • a purchase process from York Development underway for the old courthouse on Ridout Street.
We would like to share the following with you –
  • Access the City Climate Emergency plan unveiled on November 20 here
  • Access the results from the City’s Neighbourhood Decision Making 2019 voting held November 9th here.
  • Check out the yearly fabulous program and trade show for the Guelph Organic Conference coming up January 23-26 (where farmers and consumers meet)
  • Look for TREA at the London Home Builders' Association’s Lifestyle Home Show  in the new year at Western Fair District. Hours are Friday, January 31, 2020 | 12 pm – 9 pm, Saturday, February 1, 2020 | 10 am – 8 pm, and Sunday, February 2, 2020 | 11 am – 5 pm. Lots of information on renovating, landscaping and energy efficiency.

Taking policy action –

The province is proposing to extend the moratorium on new permits for bottled water production facilities until next October – making it almost four years since the moratorium was first enacted.

The proposal to extend the moratorium is open on the Environmental Registry of Ontario. The process to submit comments is open until 11:59 p.m. on December 18 to comment on making the moratorium permanent and the phase out of existing permits that allow groundwater extraction for bottling. Toronto Council has recently adopted a series of agenda items pertaining to food, including actions connected with the 2019 annual report of the Toronto Food Policy Council, efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with the City's food procurement, and matters involving Canada's Food Guide. Concerning the food guide, they voted to ask the federal government to take steps to develop a protocol for "food costing" to standardize the way governments across the country monitor food affordability.
