Be anxious for nothing

The scriptures are not easy: in fact, they set believers some of the toughest tests imaginable. For example, that nice verse in Philippians:

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God” (Philippians 4:6).

It’s easy to slip it through your mind and see it as an encouragement to prayer.
But it isn’t, is it? OK – hands up who never feels anxious for something?
And it seems we like to be made – and kept – afraid! Right now there’s so much in the media: the UN has told us the world is heading for destruction because of climate change, and then there’s possible wars involving China or Iran or panic at the possibility of a government led by Jeremy Corbyn. Closer to home we’re encouraged to fret about finances, health, or even the dire consequences of not having the right 'stuff'.

But the Bible means what it says: we really must aim to “be anxious for nothing”. Not easy, but even being less anxious than you otherwise could have been is a start.

We not only have the Lord to help us (he who said he’ll never leave us or forsake us), we even have the promise of the next verse:

“And the peace of God, which surpasses all our understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:7).
Go for it!
