Add the AMS 4th Annual Research Meeting to my diary!

Present your Research at the Annual Meeting!
We invite 3rd or 4th year PhD candidates or ECR scientists from each AMS research program to present an overview of their research during the Annual Meeting to be held on March 13, 2020. Each program representative will have 10 minutes for their presentation, including  3 minutes questions time from the audience. The presentation should be of a general character, so that researchers who are not closely affiliated with the project also get the main results. Do you not know in which program your research is embedded? Have a look at the new program descriptions on the AMS website and discuss it with your supervisor. Any proposed presentations will be discussed with the program directors before acceptance. Send your short abstract including title, before December 15, 2019 to ams@vu.nl

Marike van der Schaaf has has been appointed PI at the department of Rehabilitation Medicine, location AMC. Marike is an epidemiologist and physiotherapist, and is an expert in the rapidly developing field of rehabilitation in acute care for critically ill and vulnerable patients. She defended her PhD on Functional recovery after critical illness in 2009 and has published several papers on the recovery of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) patients.  Marike was in 2017 awarded an AMS grant of €120.000 for her research project entitled Exercise physiology in critically ill patients. Marike currently supervises several PhD candidates, and in addition she is a member of  numerous editorial boards, study groups and patient platforms.

Marjolein van der Krogt specializes in the research of clinical movement analysis, cerebral palsy and musculoskeletal modelling, and is a senior researcher within the department of Rehabilitation Medicine at Amsterdam UMC, location VUmc, and head of the VUmc Clinical Movement Analysis lab. In her research Marjolein aims to integrate research and clinical care, and by doing so performs patient-oriented research projects and thereby directly improves healthcare via her research outcomes. Marjolein defended her PhD entitled Gait deviations in children Cerebral palsy: a modeling approach in 2009, and was in 2018 awarded an AMS grant of €135,000 for the project proposal Comprehensive neuromusculoskeletal modelling to predict the effect of impairments on gait in children with cerebral palsy. Marjolein has been awarded several prizes during her tenure, and is a successful co-supervisor of several PhD candidates.
Raoul Engelbert appointed professor of Child Physical Therapy
Raoul Engelbert, lecturer in Physical Therapy at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (HvA), has been appointed extraordinary professor of Child Physical Therapy at the University of Amsterdam. Engelbert holds this chair from November 1. With his special professorship, Engelbert focuses on the moving function of children at Emma Children's Hospital, including chronically ill children. He also investigates how to effectively optimize care in the transition from hospital to home, including the care for premature babies and children who have been admitted to  the Intensive Care Unit.

All AMS Scientists: Register your Output for 2019!

As the end of 2019 approaches, the academic community again have to report on the activities in the past year. We ask all scientists, junior and senior, to register their output in PURE. The scientific papers should all be harvested automatically, but please go through and see if you are missing something, you can then import the missing output yourself. Please also go through your scientific papers and make sure each output is linked to the relevant AMS research program(s). Each output may be linked to several research programs if relevant, and if not, please remove the research program from the output. Activities of societal relevance still have to be registered by the individual researchers; this may be a (professional or layman) publication / guideline / award / grant / clip / media attention / dataset / meeting etc. This is also an excellent opportunity to update your personal PURE page with a recent picture as well as any additional information you might want to share, be it your Orcid id, details of your research interests, names of supervised PhD candidates, any Prizes and Awards and information of your teaching activities. View this tutorial for how to update your personal page. If you need help with registering your output, contact your department head, or alternatively get in touch with ams@vu.nl, and we will redirect you. The deadline for registration is February, 1.

Finally, as research institute we would very much appreciate if you could please also share with us your absolute highlight of 2019, send it by mail to ams@vu.nl. Again, this may be a scientific paper, or an activity relevant for society. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Cellular Senescene publication in Aging Cell by Andrea Maier
Cellular Senescence is one of the most prominent pillars of ageing and is likely to cause age-related diseases. With a prominent group of researchers within the International Cell Senescence Association (ICSA) Andrea Maier recently described the key cellular and molecular features of senescence and also made recommendations how to measure senescence. That cellular senescence is undoubtable associated with chronological age has recently been published in Ageing Cell – most remarkable is the heterogeneity of the presence of senescent cells in different organs, which might be the reason for the difference in the pace of ageing in our human body. Knowledge Sector Takes Major Step Forward in New Approach to Recognising and Rewarding Academics
VSNU, NFU, KNAW and ZonMw want to ensure that the recognition and rewards system is better suited to the core tasks of the knowledge institutions in the areas of education, research, impact and patient care, and that the appreciation academics receive is better aligned with society's needs. Change is urgently needed in the way universities recognize and reward their academic staff. Research achievements have long determined academics’ career paths, and this dominance is becoming increasingly at odds with reality. Education and impact are also crucial to the success of a modern knowledge institution, as is patient care for university medical centers. Therefore a position paper is being published, 'Room for everyone’s talent'. To facilitate a wider variety of possible career paths and profiles, to offer more opportunities for collaboration, across disciplinary boundaries in various financial instruments. How to Protect your Invention - Patents and other Means to Safeguard Inventions
Suppose you came up with a unique invention or innovation. Of course, you don't want someone else to run off with it. How do you actually protect an invention and what are the benefits of patenting? During this workshop, organized by IXA, you will learn what a patent is, how to use it and how you can benefit from a patent. You will get information on who can file for a patent, what you can do with it, what is and what is not patentable. IXA provides you with an overview of the patenting process and supports you along the way. Researchers and PhD’s are welcome. December 12, Location AMC. More information and registration.

Workshop Work-Life Balance
Achieving work-life balance is a daily challenge. Forum for Young Scientists organizes an interactive workshop for PhD candidates and Post Doctoral Researchers on Monday December 2 on the subject, given by Ellis Vyth, senior trainer at Hertz. Elements that will be discussed in this workshop are: making plans concrete, making choices in the tasks you want to perform, negotiating and learning to say 'no'. Sign up.
Time Management and Pitching your Research for VU PhD Candidates
During the course Time Management, you will learn to focus on your work goals and how to reach these goals effectively, by making the right choices and by being aware of the consequences of your choices and actions. With practical tools, you will learn how to relate differently to your work, your time and yourself. This will result in lower stress levels, a better overview and calmness. For more information and registration. In the  workshop Pitching your Research  you concentrate on a variety of short exercises looking at how to tell an inspiring story, how to formulate the key message the best way possible and how to achieve a powerful introduction as well as a conclusion. The focus is on putting one's vision into words and on the effective use of metaphors. More information and registration
Scientific Integrity
How to deal with integrity and ethical questions can on paper be quite straight forward, but on the work floor and between colleagues, it can be experienced as an area of in which to tread with care.  AMS and Amsterdam UMC see research integrity as an important field in which all scientists, both senior and junior, should be fully aware of. All PhD candidates have to complete a course research integrity. This course Scientific Integrity is divided into two parts: an e-learning part and contact classes part. The e-learning part can be performed at any computer with internet access. It will take about 16-20 hours to complete this part. The contact teaching part will be planned in a class of ACTA PhD students, with a maximum of 20 participants. The e-learning part is in English; the contact classes will be given also in English.  Special price for AMS PhD candidates: €200, quote 'AMS member' when registering to get the membership price. Approval by your supervisor is compulsory. More information.
