The traditional Durham Miners Association Christmas Concert returns to Redhills next month.

For many years, the Christmas concert at Redhills, Durham Miners Hall was a highlight of the festive season for DMA members and their families.

Last year, the much-loved festive tradition was revived – and opened to the public for the first time. It returns this year on Saturday 7 December and all are welcome to enjoy a performance from the DMA Brass Band in the magnificent setting of The Pitman’s Parliament.

Doors open at 6.30pm, with the performance beginning at 7pm. Mince pies and hot drinks will be served in the Committee Room.

150th anniversary of DMA celebrated at Durham Cathedral

Marking 150 years to the day since the founding of the DMA, the Evensong service was a moving and powerful celebration of the people and communities of the Durham Coalfield, past and present.

Attended by representatives of the DMA and the Cathedral, the service featured miners banners, and music from the DMA Brass Band.

The cathedral’s crossing was transformed with vibrant banners from Monkwearmouth and Sherburn collieries, as well as the DMA’s 150th anniversary banner. Emmerdale actor Charlie Hardwick read ‘Durham Beatitude’, a poem recalling the Miners’ Gala following the Easington Colliery Disaster of 1951 and former miner turned Priest, Reverend David Bond, delivered a contemplative sermon to the congregation.

Another poignant moment saw the grandchildren of mining stock carry a miners’ safety lamp through the cathedral, honouring their ancestors in the most fitting way.

The thanks of the DMA go to all who attended.
