On Saturday, November 15 and Sunday, November 16, the third local class of CanCare volunteers completed their training which was held at St. Andrews Anglican Church in Mount Pleasant. This was the first time that the training was done entirely by local trainers: Ken Alexander, Louise Harvell, Lynn Joye, and Mary Wilbur. In addition, Dr. Elizabeth Christian, a retired oncologist, gave a talk to the volunteers. The training was also attended by Teresa Doyle from the Houston CanCare organization who observed and provided feedback to the trainers. Women from St. Matthews Lutheran Church provided lunch for the group on Saturday.
We extend congratulations and a warm welcome to the newest certified CanCare volunteers!

CanCare Volunteers Serve Dinner at Hope Lodge
|
|
On November 5, CanCare volunteers served dinner to residents of Hope Lodge. The residents are cancer patients and their caregivers who live out of town and stay at Hope Lodge while undergoing cancer treatments at Charleston medical facilities. Residents make their own arrangements for breakfast and lunch, but local volunteers provide a dinner meal every evening. The food that evening was donated by Home Team BBQ. CanCare volunteers who assisted were Cheri and Henry Coleman and Mary and Don Wilbur.
CanCare has the opportunity to serve a dinner meal to the residents of Hope Lodge several times a year. If you would be willing be in charge of coordinating the food, please contact Lynn Joye. This would involve researching local restaurants who make donations and completing the process to apply for their donation OR determining a menu and working with CanCare volunteers who would prepare and serve the food themselves.

Home Team BBQ Donates Food for Meal at Hope Lodge
Home Team BBQ donated the dinner meal for CanCare volunteers to serve to residents of Hope Lodge on the evening of November 5. This meal came at no cost to us through the restaurant’s charitable donations program. The restaurant provided pulled pork, dry rub chicken, slider buns, sauce, poppy seed coleslaw, collards, mac n cheese, tea, lemonade, and all serving plates and utensils.
A BIG shout out to Home Team BBQ for their support of local charities!

Volunteer Spotlight: Cheri & Henry Coleman
|
|
Facts About Cheri & Henry:
Henry is a native of the Lowcountry who spent his childhood in the Old Village. Cheri is also a native, growing up west of the Ashley. She and Henry met by happenstance when she was spending time one weekend with her cousin, who lived in Mt. Pleasant and happened to be a friend of Henry’s. They were both 16 at the time and have been together ever since. They were married in 1972 at St. Andrew’s Church, where Henry has been a member all his life. Cheri and Henry both worked for the U.S. government. Cheri worked in accounting while Henry worked in the Department of the Navy, testing the safety of submarines following repair work. Henry also served in the Air Force Reserve for 21 years and his missions included Panama and Desert Storm. They are now both retired. Henry has discovered a passion for repairing antique automobiles and Cheri loves taking care of their two pups. They have both been involved in various ministries at St. Andrew’s throughout the years and are currently active in a Life Group there that is very dear to them.
Diagnoses & Treatments:
In 2009, Cheri and Henry were each diagnosed with different forms of cancer. Henry was diagnosed first with prostate cancer. He had surgery for the cancer at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. Two weeks after Henry’s diagnosis, Cheri was diagnosed with breast cancer. She had a lumpectomy followed by radiation. In 2013, Cheri was diagnosed with a different type of breast cancer in the opposite breast. She had a double mastectomy in December 2013.
Cheri & Henry's Resources for Dealing with Cancer:
While acknowledging that the period when they both had cancer was difficult, Cheri and Henry agree that, if it had to happen, they are glad it happened once they had moved back to Charleston. Their family, friends and fellow members of St. Andrew’s stepped in with both prayer and food. The Women of the Traditional Service at St. Andrews even provided food every night for a month. Being part of St. Andrew’s Church and their faith were a great blessing to them while they dealt with cancer.
Cheri & Henry and CanCare:
Cheri & Henry learned about CanCare from Lynn Joye who is also a member of St. Andrew’s Church. They were in the 2nd local training class in November 2018. They have both been matched several times. Henry’s last match was actually a husband whose wife was dealing with cancer. The Colemans have a lot to offer others who are dealing with cancer. They can speak as both cancer patients and cancer caregivers. The unusual thing is that they were each in BOTH roles at the same time! In addition to talking with cancer patients and caregivers one-on-one, they have volunteered to serve at Hope Lodge both times that CanCare has been responsible for the evening meals. It’s apparent that Cheri and Henry’s lives are service-oriented. And, for an organization like CanCare, having volunteers who really enjoy helping and serving others is a real blessing.
Thank you, Cheri and Henry for your contributions to CanCare!
