Dear Grad Students,

As temperatures cool down, the Passport to Professional Development is heating up! Have you submitted your passport yet? The Fall deadline to collect prizes is December 20, 2020. Register now.

If you're looking for a few more events to round out your Passport, you can learn to negotiate a job offer from the Career Center and QB3; acquire the fundamentals of Stata and Python at the D-Lab; or attend the TextXD Conference to meet text processing experts from academia and industry. All the details are below.

Paid Research and Mentoring Opportunity
($5,000), Summer 2020

The SURF SMART program is looking for graduate student mentors for the coming summer. This program gives you a chance to design a research project and mentor an undergraduate student as you work together towards its completion.
SURF SMART will provide participants with a $5,000 summer stipend. Apply by December 4. Presented by the Graduate Division and the Office of Undergraduate Research and Scholarships. 

Understanding Microaggressions: Online Learning Experience and Workshop, December 5

Join Élida Bautista, Director of Inclusion and Diversity at Berkeley Haas, for a workshop on understanding how microaggressions manifest and how to address them to create a more inclusive work climate. 
This workshop includes an online learning component, followed by a livestreamed or in-person workshop on December 5. Register now to attend. Presented by: Berkeley-Haas Lifelong Learning. 

STEM Leadership through Thriving in Science


Are you a STEM student interested in helping your fellow grad students and postdocs grow their skills and explore possible careers? If so, then send an e-mail to ucberkeley.thriving.in.science@gmail.com and sign up for a leadership role in Thriving in Science starting next semester. In addition to helping make a difference in the lives of your peers, you’ll also gain executive experience that will help you grow as a leader. The time commitment is about 2-3 hours/month. GSR Position in Data Science Education (w/fee remission)

Get involved with data science education. D-Lab is hiring up to five full-fee remission, 50% time appointment (20 hours/week), graduate student researcher (GSR) positions starting in January 2020. See more info about these positions here.
