Volunteers from Goshen and surrounding communities spent Monday morning, Nov. 25, planting fruit trees to start a community orchard at Abshire Park, 1302 E. Lincoln Ave.
The planting was thanks, in part, to a $30,000 grant through the Arbor Day Foundation with corporate sponsorship from Enterprise Holdings Foundation.
The trees will bear a variety of fruits, from apples and pears to honeyberries and chestnuts. The plantings count toward the urban tree canopy goal of 45% by 2045 and the fruits, once grown, will be available for picking to anyone in the community.
The Goshen Economic Development Commission will have a seat open in 2020. The City Council will review applications and make an appointment to the Economic Development Commission for four years.
The Goshen Economic Development Commission deals with matters related to the City of Goshen’s financing of economic development or pollution control facilities under Indiana Code § 36-7-12. The Commission is made up of three commissioners appointed by the Mayor. One of the members is selected by the Mayor, one is nominated by the County Council, and one is nominated by the City Council.
The city’s Economic Development Commission meets when needed. Notices with the date, time and location of a meeting are issued ahead of time to notify the public.
