Laura Melnick - Shelterbox
- Shelterbox started in 2000, in the UK then moved to Canada and the US
- 1.2 million boxes have been sent out since 2000 from Canada alone
- 88 million people displaced in 2018 throughout the world
- provides emergency shelter to aid Communities in their own recovery
- since 2000, Shelterbox has responded to over 300 disasters, worked in over 100 Countries, helped well over 1,200,00 people, become a leader in humanitarian shelter sector
- Criteria needs to be met before response; need, aide, resources, time
- no need to give Shelterbox back, pay it forward to families who need them
- 4 types of Shelterbox kits; extreme cold, extreme heat, conflict areas to blend in...(missed the 4th)
- smaller Shelter kits for repairs; walls, roof etc.
- transforms shelter into a home, customize to each family
- Shelterbox started with a Rotarian
- Rotary assists with fundraising and on location after a disaster
- Shelterbox costs $1000 Canadian to provide a temporary home for 1 family
