Dear Friends and Colleagues,

As a reader of SFEI’s Newsletter, you share my passion for a vital and healthy environment in the San Francisco Bay-Delta region. As 2019 winds down, I want to thank you.

I am grateful for the work you do to ensure the Bay Area's clean water, healthy ecosystems, and resilient communities, and for the strong collaboration we've nurtured together over the years.

Going forward, it will take all of us and more to ensure that we stay ahead of our challenges. The long-term investments needed to address our regional transportation, housing, and social-equity issues will also require bold action on climate adaptation and resilience.  Our climate solutions must be guided by systems thinking and nature-based processes.

That’s why I also invite you to consider making a tax-deductible gift to SFEI this year.

Give to SFEI

SFEI is providing historic Bay Area leadership on climate adaptation and resilience challenges. We convene and lead collaborative efforts to answer key science questions. We then provide actionable solutions and technical support.  Finally, we empower practitioners with science and technology to enhance effective planning and policies.

Your support enables us to:

  • Extend the impact of our work — We will share our landscape-based science frameworks and tools with communities and hundreds of professionals on the frontlines of climate adaptation planning.
  • Match restricted grants — We will build on existing foundation and government grants to provide scientific research and technical support to communities that otherwise don’t have access to SFEI’s resources.
  • Maintain data integrity and update tools — SFEI has created a wide range of technology to inform and empower community decision makers and leaders. Your support will enable SFEI to help the region's many leaders to envision bold solutions to climate challenges.

On behalf of everyone at SFEI, I thank you for considering SFEI in your end-of-year giving.  For more information about our 501(c)(3) organization, take a look at our Guidestar entry and Strategic Plan.  Then please go to the Support SFEI page to donate now.

Thank you again for all that you do.

Together, we can build a national model of how an urban region of eight million people, at the edge of the sea, can adapt to the challenge of climate change and foster resilient ecosystems where people and wildlife thrive.

Yours,

Warner Chabot
Executive Director

Is microplastic pollution a threat to ecosystem resilience in the Bay?

SFEI, university partners, and the nonprofit 5 Gyres released a groundbreaking microplastics study that revealed 1) over 7 trillion microparticles are entering Bay waters each year, 2) a large portion of the particles are coming from urban runoff, and 3) prey fish are ingesting the plastic.
